Maya Caprice or Hotel Baren in Wengen

My husband and I are trying to decide where to stay for 3 nights in Wengen this summer. I'm seeing a lot of recommendations for the Maya Caprice but since it's right next to the train station I'm worried that it will be loud and we'll hear the train noise early in the morning or late in the evening. The Hotel Baren looks really nice and I was thinking about booking there but there don't seem to be a lot of comments about that one. Any insights on either hotel would be much appreciated. Thanks, Alison.

We stayed at Hotel Bären on our 2007 visit to Switzerland, when it was a basic, 2-star hotel known mainly for its fine cuisine. We really loved it there and I started recommending it then. I believe it has since been added to Rick’s recs for Wengen. It has also been upgraded in terms of rooms and services, but I assume the food is as good as ever. If we. We’re to return I would take half-board there.

I cannot compare to the Maya Caprice as we have not stayed there, but I know it has some fans here. If the train noise is your concern, you should ask about that. The trains are electric and not noisy, and they don’t run all night, so it may not be an issue.

Note that the hill going down to the Bären is very steep. Not a problem if you are used to walking (as we are), but some might find that hill a bit daunting.

Both the Bären and the Maya will have you covered regarding food. I have dined at both.
Regarding the trains: The railway passes in front of the hotel. If your room is at the other side (which is the side you want, as it has the views) you will not be bothered a lot by them. And the trains stop running above Wengen in the evening anyway.

Bären is a bit further from the centre, and the walk back is a bit uphill. Maya Caprice definitely has the better views.

We spent a week at the Maya Caprice in October, and never once heard the trains. We did have a mountain view suite though. I was actually quite surprised one morning when I noticed the train going past our living area window, we couldn't hear a thing.

The food and views at the Maya Caprice were simply incredible.

We did dine at the Baren one evening, and we thought that the food wasn't quite as good, plus the walk back up the hill was not easy. I wouldn't have wanted to be walking it regularly, although I did suffer a lot with the altitude. It might have been easier if not for that.
