We are 2 senior women traveling to Switzerland after 3 nights in Alsace, France in mid-May 2027. Not sure if Bern or Lausanne would be the best base for 5-6 nights. We want to explore Lausanne , Bern and the Lauterbrunnen area. We will be in Switzerland May 12 to May 17 or 18 and not sure if we are too early for the Berner Oberland region. Any suggestions are very welcome. Thanks.

May is a bit early for hiking in the Berner Oberland due to soggy/muddy trails at altitude above the Lauterbrunnen Valley. If you’re not primarily hiking, on the higher trails, then May works.
Bern is much closer to the Berner Oberland (1 hour) than Lausanne is. Because Lausanne is 2:45 away from Lauterbrunnen, Lausanne doesn’t work as a base for daytripping there. However, if I were to visit the area, I would stay in Montreaux rather than Lausanne.
However, I recommend that you stay in either Murren, Wengen or Lauterbrunnen for a few nights rather than daytripping from Bern. Once you actually see these mountains— you’ll be glad you chose to stay in the mountains. You can always daytrip there to see Bern’s historic center.
