Matterhorn viewpoint options

Hello!

I'll be traveling to Switzerland in early September during the week of Labor Day and staying only one night in Zermatt. In the morning, I am trying to decide on a trip to either Gornergrat or Rothorn for Matterhorn views. Who has experience with one or both of these that might be able to offer some specific guidance on how they differ or which is better?

Thank you!

Zach

By Rothorn, I assume you mean Grindjisee, the lake up there.
Then, in both cases you can get a picture of the Matterhorn reflected in a lake.
I've hiked to both. Slight preference for Gornergrat (Riffelsee) because it is easier to get to, and you are closer to the Matterhorn.

Thanks, shoe! The Rick Steves Switzerland guidebook mentions only Rothorn, no Grindjisee or any lake in the description, but perhaps it is the same thing.

Pick the one that you can get a view from. Everyday in Zermatt is not like a travel poster. It could be a miserable day on the one you have allotted. Hope for the best, get up well before sunup, look outside. If you luck out and it is clear, you might be able to catch the first sunlight on the tip of the Matterhorn and watch the sun line creep down the east face.

Fantastic. Thank you, shoe! Riffelsee looks perfect and very easy to get to.
