Matterhorn Alpine Crossing now open

This new cable car links the Klein Matterhorn cable car station in Switzerland, at more than 3,800 meters (12,467 feet) above sea level, with Testa Grigia in Italy, at 3,458 meters (11,345 feet).

Cars take about four minutes to travel the 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) over the Theodul glacier.

An adult return trip will cost 240 Swiss francs ($267) through the end of August and 218 francs ($243) in September and October.

30 Francs a minute - good money. Hope it is a good ride.

Fabulous looking trip! Might have to do a Zermatt stay over while we are there this year.

Nigel, the price is for the whole route, Zermatt to Cervinia, 90 minutes. Brings that cost-per-minute down a bit. 😆 The Swiss part of the journey is discounted with applicable passes.

GA travelcard, Half-Fare travelcard, Swiss Travel pass: 50% on trains between Zermatt and Testa Grigia

You shouldn’t have to wait in line at that price. Amazing- no food, no skiing, no room for the night.

I've been monitoring the opening of this new cable car. I'll be there in September and I think I want to do this when I go up to Klein Matterhorn. At least as far as Testa Grigia. Why not? The entire trip is a "Blow that Dough" experience already, so I might as well add a few more CHF to the final bill. Of course, weather and available time will determine whether it happens or not. It looks amazing.

ThePirate, I hope you do a trip report cause it looks amazing. We haven’t been to Switzerland yet but we are looking at 2025 due to my over planning of trips which need to be taken.
And I agree with you, once we get in that plane, all bets are off and the credit card comes out.

I just looked at the booking website. As of right now, they only sell tickets for the Alpine Crossing leg until September 10th. I will not be there until September 19th. I'm not sure if the cable car shuts down during the winter months or if they are just not yet selling tickets for the winter months. I'll have to see how this unfolds. I would think it would be used for skiers, but perhaps the winds are too strong in the winter months or something.

Edited to add: The press release calls it a "year-round connection", so I think they are just not opening the ticket sales for winter yet. Probably so they can change pricing for the ski season.

Pirate, from a few of the news articles I have read, it sounds like it will operating year-round.

I’ll be in Zermatt next June and have added this to my list.

"we are looking at 2025 due to my over planning of trips which need to be taken."

@Barbara - I am sorry but this just made me laugh out loud. Isn't that why we all follow this forum? To be able to add yet more trips to already long wishlists?

And no....total height chicken here and will not be adding this to my list but interesting information none-the-less.

Eh... Mixed feelings about this one, but the area wasn't pristine at all anyway (major ski resort), so I guess the additional impact is limited?
It certainly boosts the appeal of Breuil-Cervinia as a year-round destination.
