Anyone have any experience with this. I understand it just opened last summer. Zermatt to Cervinia
I recall seeing another thread about this, by someone planning to go from Italy to Zermatt I will try to find that. In the meantime, I found one YouTube video ( but have not watched it).
Weather permitting I am planning to do this when I am there in May.
I haven't done it, but one thing to note is that it is not a single cable car
ride. You ride multiple existing cable cars up to the top on the Swiss side
(Klein Matterhorn), and then there is a new cable car that can take you
from there over to Plateau Rosa on the Italian side. This used to only be
accessible on foot or skis.
One thing that is probably consistent in winter or summer is that you
need to be aware of the operating hours for the cable cars that go across
the top. It's a long, expensive cab ride if you go over to the other side and
miss the last cable car back.
The interactive map makes it look like there are cable cars that can take
you all the way to Cervinia if you are not a skier as well, but someone else
will have to confirm.
There are videos on youtube and I'm sure, other places that show the ride, etc.
Thank you for all the advice. And yes, operating times are important. I received an email back from the cable car operators in Breuil-Cervina that the return trip from Zermatt was around 2:30 pm. Lessons from visits to Lauterbrunnen and San Moritz is to head up the mountains early if you want to see the peaks and not just clouds, so an early start would be easy.
We are now rethinking our plans, and debating whether we should head up to Locarno and visit the stone villages northwest of the lake that are identified as some of the most beautiful villages of Switzerland. Time to post a different question, perhaps in the Swiss Forum.
Again, your info and time is greatly appreciated.
Ahhhh, Sonogno. I have been trying to include this in our Swiss itinerary for years. I probably need to plan a trip just around that.
