Please any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My husband and I with 3 grown children love to hike and bike and explore.
Which mountain hikes would be good this time of year?
Should we stay in Lauterbrunnen to do both sides of the valley? Any recommendations for where to stay in Lauterbrunnen?
People have mentioned how great it is to stay in Murren, but is it a hassle to park and haul stuff up the mountain?
Any recommendations for itinerary given the days would be a plus. We are flying out of Zurich on April 3rd at 10a.m.
Now the bad news...
You picked one of the worst times to visit. It's the end of the ski season, and hiking is all but impossible. During the winter, the resorts maintain groomed winter walking trails, but by the end of March, they usually become too slushed. Your hiking and cycling options will be almost non-existent anywhere except in the valley. Many of the hotels and restaurants also start to close for the shoulder season.
Given your reply Tom, I wonder if it would be better to stay in the Valley? Spring break from school had us working with these dates.
Does anybody have suggestions for lodging in Lauterbrunnen?
Hotel Staubbach is really nice minimalistic place to stay. There are several hotels in Lauterbrunnen, and I doubt you'll find a bad one!
Murren a hassle? No, I don't think it's a hassle at all. Getting there on the gondola and the little 15 minute train ride is half the fun. The views are breathtaking.
Tim, given the info I got on the area in March from a previous post, I didn't know if it would be more "slushy" up in the mountain villages and not as good for hiking and moving around exploring?
Yes, if you plan to hit the dirt trails that's probably true. But you don't have to be on dirt trails. I don't do "real" hiking...I do "walking". And walking through the village on the paved walkways is breathtaking enough for me. Walk down to Gimmelwald on the little paved road. Hop on the gondola down to Stechelberg on the valley floor where you can either catch the Post Bus to Lauterbrunnen or walk along the road (hardly any traffic) to Trummelbache Falls. Visit there if you want. Then take the paved/gravel path along the river to Lauterbrunnen or catch the Post Bus. On a different day you can catch the train to Wengen, K. Scheidegg on up to the Jungfrau to the Aletsch Glacier.
There's more to do in the area than slogging through mud on dirt trails.
Why not ski while in the area? Should be plenty of coverage and good conditions.
This live web cam shows you what the weather conditions are in several locations in the Lauterbrunnen area. Today it's snowy. There is a good chance it will be that way in a month.
Those webcams show nothing of Lauterbrunnen. They are webcams in the higher elevations, and yes it's currently snowing there. But no meteorologist in the world can predict what the weather will be in those destinations in a month from now.
But no meteorologist in the world can predict what the weather will be in those destinations in a month from now. But yearly averages suggest conditions won't be pleasant. Especially snow and mud cover.
