Hello everyone,
My family will have about a 5 1/2 hour layover from Prague (on our way back home to SFO) in Zurich. We have never been to Switzerland and I’m wondering if we should chance leaving the airport for a super quick bite to eat, stroll around the city. I asked friends for their opinions and it was split 50/50. Some said absolutely others said no, you’re crazy. We would have to find somewhere to hold our carry ons because I feel like the less we have with us the better. And our flight gets into Zurich at 7:40am. Am I crazy for chancing this?
Keep in mind when you return from the city you will have to return through security. That might eat up a lot of time as opposed to just staying within security for your next flight. Zurich is a very nice city, but in my opinion it isn't necessarily a true Swiss experience.
Even though the train into the city is easy and relatively quick, I don't think I would rush around just to say you were in Zurich. You also do not know if your arrival from Prague will be on time and that may shorten your stay.
My advice, plan a trip to Switzerland all on its own. You won't regret it at all. Safe travels.
The security thing is what is really holding me back. And I guess it being a completely unfamiliar airport to us.
They recommend you get to the airport three hours early for an international flight. It could take you an hour to store your luggage and get out of the airport. It is tempting , I understand that. However, no way we would do it, especially when all you would see is Zurich. It is not like you would be in one of the iconic mountain villages or one of the lakes.
I agree. I’m thinking we are just going to have to tough out the layover in the airport. I guess we will really get to know the Zurich airport.
Yeah, I think we are just going to hang around the airport. Maybe there is a lounge we can buy a pass for or something. I’ll have to research the airport and see what there is to find.
Although it's not Zurich or the Alps, there is a beautiful naturpark at the Zurich airport that would allow you to get some fresh air and movement. You'd still have to deal with luggage storage and security, but it may appeal to you versus just staying inside the whole time.
