Luzerner Festival

Hello. I received a message from our hotel in Lucerne stating that the Luzerner Festival would be going on while we were in town. I have tried to find information such as cost and details but nothing comes up in English. Does anyone know anything about this Festival (it looks from the pictures to be huge - lots of music and activities) or know of a site that explains in English?

Hi, you didn't mention travel dates but there is also the "Luzerner Fest" which is on the weekend of June 23rd and is very different from the Lucerne Festival (a classical music festival).

The Luzerner Fest in June is more like a city-wide street festival / charity fundraiser - some main streets are closed off, bands and DJs (from blues to jazz to rock and hiphop) are playing in different locations around town until the wee hours and food/drink stands are dotted all over. It gets really crowded in the old town (70-100,000+ people over the weekend) and is basically a big street party. Many events are free, but you can also pay for a pin that entitles you to certain concerts, free after-parties and other benefits. Unfortunately the website doesn't seem to have English translations, but you can at least have a look at the music program and if you click on the performer, it does give you the genre http://www.luzernerfest.ch/de/bands

By contrast, the Lucerne Festival is a series of classical music concerts and events which takes place primarily at the KKL concert hall. Hotels fill up, but there is not really an impact on sightseeing or tourist sights, nor are the classical music fans as "lively" as the crowds at Luzerner Fest.

Hope this helps!

And PS, the pin you can buy for free entry to concerts, etc costs 10 Swiss francs and proceeds go to charity. There are always people walking around selling them on the day of the event, so you don't have to get it ahead of time or anything. If you are interested, I can also translate the other benefits for you, just let me know.
