We have 4 days to spend in Luzern and Zurich. We will be in Lauterbrutten for 3 days. Should we spend 2 days each or 3 in one and 1 in the other? What are the best sites to see?
I am very partial to Luzern. Lots to do, smaller city, and charming. I would do 3 there and one night in Zurich. But, you can't go wrong with 2 & 2, which just gives you one full day in each city. From Luzern you could take one day and see the mountains and lakes (Rigi by boat and Pilates) and the second full day enjoying the city itself. You wouldn't be able to do that much with a 2&2 schedule.
Roy,
I'm also very partial to Lucerne so my choice would be three days there and one in Zürich. In addition the sites in the city, Lucerne provides some good options for day trips (lake cruises, Mt. Pilatus or Rigi) and has an awesome transportation museum.
Zürich is also a beautiful city and has some interesting sites, but it's a much larger city and the "character" is much different than Lucerne.
Zurich is a business/banking city. Yes, it's nice - but nothing like Lucerne. I would only stay in Zurich if I had a flight out of ZRH airport the next morning.
Since there are direct trains from Luzern to the Zurich airport every hour (and more with changes), you don't even have to stay in Zurich to catch a flight, unless it's very early in the morning.
Do you have Rick's Switzerland book? I found it one of his best, and he has lots of sights listed for both cities.
