Luzern to Lugano

There are direct trains beginning at 10:18 and every 2 hours until 22:18. At other times you connect at Arth-Goldau. These go though the new Gotthard Base Tunnel, taking 2 hours. If you want a scenic route, take the train from Luzern to Erstfeld and change to the Regional Express to Lugano that will take the old route up the mountain and pass through the old Gotthard Tunnel and down the valley to Lugano, taking 3 hours and 20 minutes. Slower is the Gotthard Panorama Express (reservation required) that starts with a boat ride from Luzern station dock at 11:12 to Fluelen, then train with panorama cars using the old Gothard Tunnel, taking 5 1/2 hours. It used to be called the William Tell Express.
