Luzern & the Berner Oberland in November

I might be returning to Europe in mid November at the invitation of a friend who lives near Dortmund, Germany. If I decide to go (much of it depends on finances), I am considering visiting Switzerland as I had initially planned to do this very month. My idea is to base myself in Luzern and take day trips to the Berner Oberland, Bern, and maybe Mt Rigi.

How is mid November weatherwise in the mountains? Do I risk having cable cars, trains or any kind of lifts closed? Would it be better at the end of October?

Any input would be great. Thank you.

November may not be the best time to visit some parts of Switzerland. The weather is going to be chilly, especially at night. I found that to be the case even in mid-October, but if you have appropriate clothing that's a minor issue. Also, many of the hotels and other facilities in the Berner Oberland tend to close down in the period between summer tourist season and ski season. The Allmend-Hubel Funicular will be closed from 12 October to 11 December. The Mt. Pilatus cog Funicular may not be operating at that time of year, but you should still be able to access the mountain via Cable Car from Kriens.

This past December we were in Switzerland and I considered revisiting the Berner Oberland area to ski. As I recall, not all the lifts were operational as early as the first week of December but the train from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen to Kleine Schidegg was running. Here's the website I used: https://www.jungfrau.ch. Everything appears to be shut down currently so I'd check back periodically. If you haven't been up into the Alps then I would definitely go regardless if it's October or November. Don't hestitate to rent a car for the day. The parking lot in Lauterbrunnen is right next to the train station as well as across from the cable car.

For the other side of the valley in the Berner Oberland, this 2020 timetable lists the mid-November dates when different lines (like to the top of Schilthorn) are closed for maintenance.

We were in Switzerland last November [seems like a lifetime ago] for the Xmas markets [Switzerland, France, & Germany.] We day tripped to Luzern, then took a one-hour boat ride, to the cogwheel train up to Mt. Rigi. Even tho it was cloudy in Luzern, the top of Mt. Rigi was spectacular, sunny and almost balmy, but with fresh snow. It was fantastic ! I wish the same for you. Good luck!
