Luzern inexpensive place to stay?

Is the Romero Haus still open to the public? If not I need inexpensive place to stay for 2 nights in Luzern.

I stayed 5 nights at Touristen hotel in September. Approximately 1000 American dollars. So 200 per night. I am not sure what your budget is but nothing in Switzerland is cheap.

I also don't know what you consider "inexpensive" for Luzern. I can say that in September 2014, I stayed at the Hotel des Alpes (found in Rick's Switzerland book) and would do so again. Their web reservation did not show a single and had very high prices for what was available. However, by e-mailing them directly, I got a single room for 130 CHF per night, which I considered a good deal for Luzern and the level of hotel and amenities. I liked the hotel and LOVED the location, and I'd certainly stay there again.

I had the same issue with all of my Switzerland hotels, by the way - their website booking engines did not show the rooms I needed, but by e-mailing and mentioning that I found them via Rick Steves Switzerland, I got the room in all three cases, and in two cases got a discount as well. So, if you're not liking what you're finding online, don't hesitate to e-mail a hotel directly to see if they can give you a better offer.

If you're looking for something cheaper, consider the Ibis Styles. I was a bit put off by the traveler photos on TripAdvisor, but if it meets your needs, it's certainly inexpensive for Luzern. (I know I'm belaboring the point that Steve already made, but you had better adjust to Swiss prices now, or you'll have a really miserable trip).

Oh, I know Switzerland is not cheap! I was in Luzern with my husband in 2013 and found, what we considered reasonable, $200 a night at Romero Haus. I don't think it is renting rooms anymore.

Thanks for the tips!

susan,

You didn't say what your criteria was for "inexpensive" on this trip, but you might have a look at Hotel Krone. I didn't check the prices, but they may be in the range you're looking for? The hotel is within easy walking distance from the station, but I'd suggest a Taxi if you have heavier luggage.

It looks like they've done some renovating since my last visit.

There is a reasonably priced Ibis Styles near the lion monument which starts at CHF 179. Inexpensive is rare in Switzerland and especially since Luzern is popular, in Luzern. Because the Ibis Styles is relatively less expensive it books up very early.

I rented an apartment a few minutes from the train station for less than $80 a night. Try Airbnb, which is where I found my accommodation.
