In September I will be hiking for two weeks with friends in Switzerland. We will start in Engelberg (via Meiringen, Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, Kandersteg, Adelboden) and end in Lenk. We plan to hike with daypacks only. What is the best way to transfer our luggage from town to town? We are travelling very light.
The Swiss railroad has a luggage express transfer service. If you bring your luggage to the station by 9 in the morning you can pick it up at your destination at 6 in the evening. Or you can choose to pick up your luggage at a later date (for days when we stay in places with no rail service). You have to buy a train ticket to use this service.
Is possible to do this? Have I interpreted the Swiss railroad information correctly? It is quite expensive: 12 + 30 CHF per item plus your rail ticket. I assume we can buy only one rail ticket to ship all our luggage. Is there any other convenient way to transfer luggage? What options do hikers have if they don’t want to carry all their gear?
