I would highly recommend Hotel Pestalozzi in Lugano. It's in a great location about a block or so from the water, the rooms are clean and comfortable and they serve a nice breakfast.

Hotel Lugano Dante Center, great breakfast, awesome front desk staff, big clean rooms.

We stayed in the Hotel International Au Lac while on the Rick Steves Switzerland tour last summer. The hotel has a great location and air conditioning. Two very nice features when traveling in summer.

We loved the De Le Paix, which is in Paradiso (the south end of Lugano). I picked it because it had fabulous views and was walking distance to the Mnt San Salvatore funicular. We also had a lovely walk down to the lakeshore and into Lugano proper. An excellent breakfast was included.
