We will fly into Zurich but would like to take the train to a smaller city closer to Venice for 6 days. Which city is better, Lugano or Zermatt?

Lugano is much closer to Venice than Zermatt is. It is a nice city on a Lake, and Italian is the first language there.
Or consider nearby Locarno, also on a lake ( Maggiore). The is a direct train from Zurich to Locarno every 2 hours, over the scenic route instead of using the long deep tunnel.
