I will be staying in Lucerne and had thought to take an early AM flight out of Zurich to Dublin (non-stop via Swiss Air). But found a flight via Ryan Air out of Basel non-stop for about 1/4 of the price! I know there is a direct train from Lucerne to Zurich airport, but is it very difficult to get to Basel airport from Lucerne? Looks like there is a train and then a bus - maybe like 90 min. trip total? I would appreciate feedback from those experienced travellers since I have to get the flights booked soon.
Betty, it is easy to get from Luzern to Basel airport. Two trains per hour from Luzern to Basel SBB station, takes 1h10; then a shuttle bus which takes about 15 minutes. One bus ever 7½ minutes.
When you walk out the front entrance to the station, the airport bus is immediately to your left.
If you go to www.sbb.ch and enter "Luzern" to "Basel EuroAirport", plus date and time, it will give you all the times. Slightly longer than to Zürich airport, but not by much.
Just make sure you arrive in time for Ryanair, have your boarding card printed out and have read all the other rules.
P,S. a picture of the front of the station is here. The green bus on the right is the airport bus (No. 50): http://files.newsnetz.ch/story/1/7/9/17949828/9/topelement.jpg
Thank you Chris - now I just need to decide if jumping through all the hoops Ryan Air requires is worth the savings.
