Lucerne to meiringen

Hello, 2 questions
We want to travel on the train from Lucerne to Meiringen on a afternoon.
We are planning on doing the Aare gorge and head up to the Reichenbach falls.
Should we start from the falls and hike down to the gorge? do the two connect? I read somewhere about hiking the gorge and the taking a train up to hike the falls, is this correct? How much time should I allow? Also we are hoping not to have to bring hiking shoes.
Just because we are trying to keep packing down as we will be hoping on a river cruise later in the trip. Do you think tenis shoes would be okay? the gorge part looked as if we are on decking most of the way. Second question, we are in Basel for the day before our cruise. After the town tour I was thinking of us heading to the gardens of basel in the afternoon. What train would we take and what good bakeries should we not miss. Thank you for your input

there is a little train from near the Meiringen station to the other end of the gorge and you can hike back or v.v. if you want. Look at the website for the gorge.

I have never walked it - I don't know how wet the path gets.

Walking to the base of Reichenbach falls is close, you can hike up slowly or take a funicular most of the way or there is a Postbus from town which takes you eventually about half way up. There are cutouts of Sherlock Holmes that you can stand behind for a photo but that's really the only cheesy thing up there. Views and experience are nice.

If you are walking up or down I'd want something with more support than trainers.
