Lucerne stay

Hi! My husband and I are so excited to kick off our anniversary trip in Lucern at the end of June. We’ll be flying from Dallas to Zurich then taking the train to Lucern and staying there for three nights. I’d love any and all restaurant and activity/sightseeing info for Lucerne! Also, best way to get from Lucerne to Murren? TIA!!

krauss,

Your best source for information like that would be the RS Switzerland guidebook. You should be able to find a copy at your local library or larger bookstores.

The quickest and easiest way to get from Lucerne to Mürren will be via the excellent Swiss public transportation network. That trip will involve travel by train and cable car, with several changes. You can buy the tickets at the Lucerne rail station. I'd suggest using the "BLM" route, and you'll probably have to specify that when you buy the tickets. You can see all the transportion solutions on the Bahn.de website.

Stadtkeller- good Swiss meal, Swiss folklore show. Boat ride on Luzern Lake. Or (and) Mount Pilatus, Mount Rigi, trip to Mount Titlis. One of those three.

If you take the Zentralbahn train over the Brünig Pass (rather than the flatland trains via Bern) you get a fabulous view on a narrow gauge cogwheel train and have one of the best train experiences in the country - so good that they even put on special names trains (Golden Pass is the marketing name for the expensive tourist train on the same route). But you don't have to pay anything extra. The trains are airconditioned and all have floor to ceiling panoramic windows - no extra charge. Lake views, waterfall views, mountain views, all included. And Sherlock Holmes thrown in for good measure.

I took the route over the Brünig Pass in the other direction (from Interlaken to Lucerne) and it's well worth it. On the SBB website, it's referred to as the "Luzern-Interlaken Express."

When you get to Interlaken, you'll take a train to Lauterbrunnen. You then walk across the street from the station, take a gondola to Grütschalp, and then take a little train to the Mürren BLM station. (There's also a route from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg via bus and then a gondola to Mürren, but I'd only do that if you're staying very close to that gondola station; your hotel can advise you.)

As you're reading this, you're probably thinking, "That many connections? That's crazy." Don't let it worry you. This is Switzerland. You just walk a short distance from one vehicle to the next, and off you go. They collect your luggage in Lauterbrunnen and load it onto a cart attached to the bottom of the gondola. That cart is then attached to the back of the train, and you claim your luggage in Mürren.

This is all wonderful and helpful information. Thank you all so much! I'm especially excited about the train over the Brunig Pass!
