First time poster here.
Planning to be in Switzerland for a couple of days in the third week of July.
Although we will be arriving in Zurich, we are planning to use Luzern as a
base to do day trips. I've checked out the hotel recommendations in the
guidebook, but, all appear to be full or cannot accomodate a group of
3. Would anyone have any other recommendations?

We were in Luzern just one month ago. Stayed in hotel Monopol. Very close to train station, walking distance to the old town. We were satisfied with accommodation and breakfast. I originally booked with hotel Alpina but they upgraded us to their sister hotel Monopol.
We stayed at the Waldstaetterhoff 5 months ago and were pleased with our room and the breakfast spread. It's a short half block from the Monopol. The hotel gave us a Luzern travel card that included free local bus rides but the hotel is very walkable to local sights.
You didn't list specific dates but the Waldstaetterhoff appears to only have "business zimmer" sized accommodations but rooms for 1 or 2 persons, not 3 week of 18 July. Looks like you need to act quickly.
I was back in Lucerne again last September and stayed at Hotel Stern. It's an easy walk from the station and the rooms are very comfortable - http://www.sternluzern.ch/en
Try a booking engine. like Booking.com, which will show you what they actually have available for the time you will be there. Enter your dates, # people, and other criteria to filter. It's pretty tough to contact hotels one at a time, especially this late in he game.
I am looking to go to Lucerne next month and I wanted to know where did you end up staying. Did you like it ?
