Lucerne lodging suggestions - 5 ppl

We will be in Lucerne for a few days in late June 2019. We are a family of five so lodging is a challenge in cities. We have not traveled to Lucerne as a family and we really don't know the area. We are interested in recommendations for:

  1. Any hotels or B&Bs that have rooms for five that are close to public transportation and major sights (a few bus stops from train station for example)

  2. Neighborhoods that would be good to focus on if we are searching for apts/vacation rentals through Booking.com, AirBnB, etc. (safe, pleasant, efficient for public transportation to usual top sights)

We realize we might have to just look at the usual tourist areas and get two rooms in a more traditional style lodging but before we do that we'd like some other options. Would like to keep the cost below $350 per night if possible. Thanks for any help!!!

We paid 346/night last August in the Neptun I Chapel Bridge HIT rental -right on the river, walk everywhere. It had one bedroom and the main room had two double bed sleeper couches. I don't know your ages and if that would work or not. I know finding three separate beds for my two adult children who can not share a bed does not make it easy.. We have to get two rooms or apartments with three beds. This was one of the most expensive places we stayed but it was awesome, the view was great. Free laundry also.

Finding a hotel in the US that sleeps five (in real beds) is challenging. Much more difficult in Europe. You might get lucky and find a “family room” but it will most likely include a sofa bed. You’ll probably have a much easier time finding apartments. Just be careful when reading the description. A room with a sofa bed is often considered a “bedroom”. We travelled with two teens this summer and found great apartments for much less than two hotel rooms. It just takes some research. We used Airbnb and booking.com.

Amy,

You might have a look at Hotel Stern as they have some larger rooms. Here's one example - https://www.sternluzern.ch/en/four-bed-room . You may be able to use something like that with a fold-out cot. They also have a family room located in a nearby building that may be suitable. You'll have to contact them for current prices.

As with anywhere in Switzerland, be sure to budget accordingly as it's expensive!

When I was in Lucerne with my two daughters, we had a room that slept 3. I believe there were larger rooms as well. We stayed at what some would consider a more modest property. I believe I paid about $120. At that rate, you could get two rooms if they don't have a room that sleeps five. I believe it is considered 3 star. https://www.drei-koenige.ch/de They had a rather extensive breakfast included in the rate which was convenient. We were able to walk to most places in Lucerne and about a 5-10 minute walk to the chapel bridge.

You might want to try at the Hotel Tourist. Its a nice, clean midrange hotel just downriver from the tourist area. I've stayed there a few times and I've seen a good amount of larger families. My guess is that they'll have rooms that adjoin or quads that will take a rollaway bed.
In terms of safety and quiet, Luzern is both. I've been all over Luzern and I've yet to encounter a neighborhood that is sketchy or loud. In Zurich, Basel or Bern, yes, but not Luzern.

The Tourist Hotel, right on the water, has a 4 bed (maybe 5, I think that there is a trundle bed under one of the beds).
