Hi,
My wife, son (6 years old) and I will be spending 1 day and night in Lucerne. We are looking to book a hotel close to the old town and train station. We don't need anything extravagant...just clean, comfortable and with a private washroom.
We would appreciate any recommendations you may have.

Hotel Monopol - right across the street from the station and short walk from the lake and old town.
The Rick Steves Switzerland guide book gives good advice for hotels in Luzern. I have gotten excellent free advice and assistance using the Luzern Tourismus office, the official Swiss tourist information office.

They have an office, where you can pick up maps and brochures and get in-person advice, inside the Luzern train station on Gleis (track) 3, near the Burger King.
I second the recommendation for Hotel Monopol. We had a one-night stay in Lucerne this summer and stayed there. Great location and nice accomodations.
