Lucerne - Des Alpes Old Town view vs drei koenige for July 4th

All - Thank you in advance for your guidance.

I am staying in Lucerne for 2 nights. I enquired Des Alpes and they only have old town view. Drei Koenige has accommodation for 3 adults.
I have read in this forum that Des Alpes river view is great. Is it worth staying with Old town view or book with Drei Koenige?
Any other hotel recommendations with breakfast and near train station? Trying to keep this less than $250.

Thank You

We were fortunate to stay at Des Alpes last year with a balcony and river view. That is what made the hotel special. With the "old town" view, the hotel would be no different than other hotel, in my opinion.
Also, of note, Hotel des Alpes used to offer complementary breakfast; not anymore. So, my vote would be your other hotel choice.

I have the Hotel Des Alpes booked for June and opted for the old town view. When I was in Switzerland this past Sept., we never spent any time on our balconies. We were always out and about doing things. So, for me, it didn’t make sense to pay extra for a room with a view of the river. Plus, I thought the old town side might be quieter as the restaurants are on the river side.

Thanks Carrie.
I booked with Drei Koenige....very responsive and they gave a good rate with breakfast and local taxes & VAT included with free buss pass.

Thanks to this forum for providing guidance from experienced travellers.

Carrie, you are correct in that the Hotel des Alpes is considerably quieter “old town side, vs balcony.”
For me it was all about the fact that the balcony overlooked the Chapel Bridge. I never got tired of the view…both at day and at night… in fact we kept the curtain open a little at night; I didn’t want to shut out our view.
We had breakfast and happy hour on our balcony one day.
VK, I looked up the location of your hotel. It is a short walk to our favorite pizza place in Luzern, La Bestia Pizza. After eating Swiss food for 3 weeks, we craved a good salad and simple pizza.

Carol, since I splurged on the 1st class Swiss Travel Pass, I figured I better cut costs where I can. 😊

I just checked out the website for La Bestia Pizza and it looks like they just opened a location in the train station near platform 14. I will definitely check out one of their locations in June. I love pizza and only eat it on vacation. 😊

A friend and I traveled to Lucerne, staying at Des Alpes. I got a balcony; he got an old town view. He liked the price of his old town view room. We both loved the balcony.

Dave, you’re a good friend. …or, did your friend have to provide the refreshments?

Hi Carrie, I just booked des alps for June - wonder if we’ll be there at the same time; although I prefer the river/bridge view, I also went for the town view. We’ll be there at the end of our 21 days of what’s becoming a very expensive trip. Did you find a good hotel in Montreux or Vevey?

Hi Emily, maybe we’ll be neighbors at the des alps. 😊 I’ll be there June 15-18. My favorite view of the chapel bridge is from the rathaussteg bridge at sunrise. I got some of my best pictures from there with the sun coming up over the mountains and reflected in the water.

I have the Grand Hotel Swiss booked in Montreux. I fell in love with it after watching this video:

I also have Hotel Schönegg booked in Wengen. I won’t tell you how much money I spent when I was in Switzerland this past Sept. 😊 But, it was money well spent and it obviously didn’t deter me from returning to Switzerland.

Carol... As I recall, we just sat on the balcony and watched the world go by. We had eaten well elsewhere 🙂.

Thanks Carol for the pizza place recommendations. Will check it out. Need that after few days spent in Iceland😂

Thanks

We stayed at des Alpes with the old town “view”. It was very quiet. We had a patio/balcony which was nice. Smallish room.

VK, La Bestia Pizza is very small. We ate outside because we had no reservations, and only one of us had the Swiss COVID certificate. We were amazed at all the pizza deliveries taking place while we were eating.

Carrie, We’re ships passing in the night. You leave the 18th and we arrive the 18th! ( possibly we’ll have “your room” on the town side.) Too bad we can’t have coffee together. It would be fun to connect.
