London to Lucerne

How do you suggest getting from London to Lucerne? Train or plane? Prefer the easiest and quickest route. We would need to fly into Zurich and take a train into Lucerne or only take trains. Thoughts?

I'm a little confused. Your prior thread asked about getting to Luzern (local spelling) from all sorts of places in Italy. This one asks about getting to Luzern from London.

Is it a good idea to share what you are planning for this trip so that we can give a more thought out answer?

I am trying to figure out the best itinerary for our trip and we have several options. We want to visit places in Italy and also Lucerne. We can get to Lucerne from either London, Venice, Bologna or Monterossa AND we can leave Lucerne and then go to Paris, Venice, Florence, Bologna or Monterosso. I have several routes we can take for our travels so I am trying to get to Lucerne and onward in our trip the easiest and quickest way. The less hassle the better. Also planes or trains.
THanks

skyscanner can tell you flights from each of those places, or their nearest airports to Zurich and it is less than an hour by train from Zurich airport to Luzern.

Use the Bahn (see Rick Steves guide on finding trains at https://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/transportation/trains/online-schedules ) for train times and then use national rail websites for prices.

Eurostar from London to Paris then super fast TGV to Zurich and local train to Luzern would be a train route from London.

1) Fly London (choice of airports) to Zürich. Train direct from the airport to Luzern, takes 1 hour.
2) Fly London (choice of airports) to Basel. Shuttle bus to Basel station, train to Luzern (again takes 1 hour). This can be cheaper as EasyJet flies Gatwick or Luton to Basel.
3) Train London to Paris, cross Paris by métro, train Paris to Basel and Basel to Luzern. Details here: http://seat61.com/Switzerland.htm#Zurich
Flying is quickest, but train is a lot more comfortable and you get to see gradually changing countryside. With all options, booking early saves money.

Any of these train and plane tickets can be cheaper if purchased well in advance, but London to Lucerne by train (Eurostar + TGV Lyria + Swiss connection) sounds like the most expensive variation. It could easily cost $300, not even at full fare, versus closer to $150 full fare by train from Venice.

st,

My preference would be a budget flight to either Zürich or Basel Europort, and then train to Luzern. Previous replies provided a good summary of those options. I took a similar route a few months ago on a flight from LGW to Geneva using easyJet, and it worked out very well. Although one has to endure the usual airport hassles, it's only necessary to put up with those for a few hours before enjoying a pleasant trip by train.
