My family and I will be traveling to France and Switzerland in June. Our plan is to travel from Chenonceaux to Montreux by train on a Sunday. From what I gather, we would need to go through Paris. Can others offer advice on how best to do that and how long of a trip it will be? We will be traveling with three kids (ages 7, 7, and 10).
Will you have a car while in the area? If so, you could drop the car before crossing the border to Geneva.
You can look up the schedule on the official French rail site
https://www.sncf-connect.com/en-en
There is currently a sale that expires today going on from France to stops in Switzerland.
You have to go back to Paris to go to Switzerland. Trains to Switzerland leave from Gare de Lyon.
The fastest option is going to be a little over 8 hours with 3 train changes at St-Pierre-des-Corps, Paris-Montparnasse & Lausanne. You can see times and routes via SBB.ch/en -- I find their website much easier to navigate and they show a lot more connection options then the sncf.
Looks like over eight and a half hours by train. It might be more economical with a family of 5, to rent a car and drop it off in Geneva. There are locations, at the airport, where you will be able to return it without the outrageous foreign country drop off fee. You might have to pick up the car in a different city than Chenonceaux. I would suggest calling AutoEurope’s toll free customer service line. Their agents could tell you the minimum days’ rental required (I believe it’s 3 days.), where the car could be rented and if there are any additional fees. You could get a train from the airport to Montreux.
