Lodging in Zurich and train route.

We are going to spend one or two nights in Zurich in October. Flying in late, leaving by train. Anyone have lodging suggestions? I'm thinking Old town for a day of exploring as we have never been to Zurich.
We have train changes in Landquart, Klosters Platz, and Zernez. Any comments on these stops, as are they worth extra time? Friends will be picking us up in Zernez taking us into Italy.

Not sure why you have a change at Klosters Platz, there are regular direct trains from Landquart to Zernez although most change their line numbers at that point, maybe that has caused some confusion.

Anyway, neither Landquart or the Platz area of Klosters is really worth a delay in the journey. Beyond Klosters Platz the train is mostly in the Vereina Tunnel where you see nothing at all. Zernez is a small village but in a very pretty location so would be the palce to stop to stretch legs and have a coffee.

BUT if you travel between 27th June and 25th October there is a way to tweak the route to miss the tunnel. You continue beyond Klosters to Davos and then ride one of the finest (and very overlooked on this forum) forms of transport in Europe - the Swiss Post Bus with it's 3 tone "I'm coming through" horns. Their Flüelapass route goes over to Susch near Zernez and is integrated into the Swiss transport ticketing system. https://www.postauto.ch/en/leisure-offers/excursion-tips/flueela-pass-route It will add time and an experience to the journey. There are trains from Susch to Zernez but it is only about 4 miles so maybe your friends could pick you up there.

From Zurich to Zernez you always change in Landquart, and sometimes also in Sagliains. Never in Koster Platz. Are you sure you are looking in the right place for times and tickets?

Thanks we will definitely look in to the bus around the tunnel!
The Kloster Platz stop comes from a Rome2rio route, must be just a stopover.

Road2Ruin once again gets confused, who'd have thought .......

to get a schedule and integrated ticket with the bus option use SBB.ch and ask for the Zurich-Zernez (or Susch) journey on a date when the bus runs (see the link) but add "Vias" of "Davos Dorf" and "Flüela, Ospiz" to force the route. In reality there are 2 options staring Zurich at 08:38 and 11:38 (the next has quite a late arrival in Zernez for an onward journey of any distance).

SwissPass is valid on the bus but Eurail isn't
