Löchental or Goms

My husband and I are trying to decide between staying in Löchental or Goms. We are hikers and plan on staying at least 5 nights because we prefer slower travel. We have been to Switzerland several times but not to either of these areas yet. Are they close enough to take day trips? We will be traveling with the Swiss Pass. Thank you for your ideas and suggestions!

I assume you mean Lôtschental?

We stayed in both areas on my first trip to Switzerland, which was a guided hiking trip with my alpine club. We stayed in Munster in Goms 3 nights and then another 3 at rustic hotel at the far end of the Lôtschental. I found the hiking there much more interesting than the hikes we did in Obergoms. However, the end of the Valley was very remote and not a good base for travel to other hiking spots.

Our favorite place in the Valais is the Aletsch area, specifically the village of Bettmeralp. If your base in Goms would facilitate travel to Bettmeralp, Fiescheralp. Eggishorn, and/or Riederalp, I would recommend that, as you will find a good 2-3 days of hiking on those trails, and I never tire of the views of the glacier.

In Bettmeralp we like Hotel Panorama for a short stay 2-3 nights), or Chalet Guxa apartments for a longer stay (5 nights).
