Locarno Activities Feedback for a 3-5 night stay

We have settled on Locarno as our first stop for our tour of Switzerland. We are flying into Linate and wanted to start in one of the lake towns or villages thrt was convenient to transfer to the Swiss train network; the candidates that seemed to work best for that were Milan, Varenna (or another town along the east side of Lake Como), Lugano or Locarno. We looked briefly at Como but liked the more scenic towns in the list above. Locarno has the benefit of being the starting point for the Treno Gottardo, the scenic train that follows the original train route across the Gotthard Pass to Lucerne (our second stop), so it moved to the top of the list.

What I have come up with so far is this list of activities: funicular to the Madonna del Sasso monastery and the cable car to Cardada with a possible hike at the terminus (suggestion from Ken-thanks!), a cruise on Lake Maggiore, a stroll through the old town, a visit to Castello Visconteo and a day trip to the castles in Bellinzona. If we feel really adventurous, we might check out paragliding over Lake Maggiore or a bungee jump from the "Golden Eye" dam, but after a long flight from the US, I think we will likely spend our sightseeing time on the ground.

Anyway, that seems like a pretty complete list and certainly justifies spending several days in Locarno. If anyone her has any other suggestions for sights or activities, I would welcome the input. Thanks!

We did many of the things you mentioned and I’ll say that I especially enjoyed Bellinzona, thinking it was a place I might like to stay in the future. We also did day trips to Lugano and to Ascona.

Janet, I agree-I learned about Bellinzona when I was researching the various train routes between Lugano and Lucerne. It sounds like a very interesting place, with three restored castles-that should be sufficient to entertain us for a day trip. The Lonely Planet Switzerland guide book describes a fascinating area north of Bellinzona (toward the Gotthard Pass) that might be a great day trip from Locarno, either by car or by train - drive time is 30 minutes between Locarno station and Bellinzona, leaving plenty of time to explore one or more of the castles as well as an exploratory drive/train ride to the north. Then we retreat the safety of our old town Locarno apartment and let the train engineer do the driving for the longer segments.

Heck, with a car, I might be tempted to drive toward the Gotthard Pass and see how far the road is open-it is probably not passable all the way to the top in early May, but even part of that drive would be pretty terrific (weather permitting, of course!).

We did a day hike in Val Verzasca from Locarno, walking 8 easy miles from the famed Ponte di Salti up to the little stone hamlet of Sonogno. We caught the 321 Postbus in front of the train station to reach the bridge, and the return bus from Sonogno (after stopping for ice cream at a little cafe).

You could shorten it by hiking only as far as Brione and catching the Postbus back from there. That was the most scenic part.

The well-marked trail follows the river, with beautiful clear aqua-colored water, and access at several points if you want to take a dip. This hike was one of the highlights of our recent trip to italy and Switzerland, which included daily hiking around Lago Maggiore, Lago di Garda, and in Switzerland.

Lola, that looks terrific, although my guess is that early May might be too cold for a swim since the snow will likely be still melting at the higher elevations, but a hike along the river would be wonderful! I'd be inclined to take my backpack and carry a nice picnic lunch so we could stop along the river, maybe a nice halfway point before we head back to the bus stop. I discovered that my CalTopo trail mapping software shows trails across norther Italy and Switzerland, so I will fire it up and chart out a trail-then I can see the trail profile and elevation gain and loss, which is always nice to know before setting out from the trailhead.

Yes, the river will be too cold for a swim but it should be beautiful, and the trail snow-free. Nice thing about May is it would be less crowded than, say, July. The Ponte di Salti is one of those “Instagram” hits that has drawn a lot of tourists for selfies post-pandemic.

We carried our lunch for a picnic and found a nice bench by the river near Brione, overlook a famous bouldering site across the river. This was about the half-way point in the hike to Sonogno. There are bus stops all along there. Here is a route map with all the stops; the one for Ponte di Salti is “Lavertezza Paese”. And a trail description with photos.

Lola, thanks once again for the great info! We also hope that May is less crowded, but that hope is competing with the hope for great weather!

The valley looks gorgeous, so we might emulate your day plan and take the Postbus to the terminus in Sonogno just to gaze at the view and hop off at a few stops to look around. Sounds like a lovely way to spend a day in Ticino-I can't wait!
