What dates/months in 2016 can we be sure that the small local wine makers in the vineyards are open and offering wine tasting? We were there mid September a few years ago and none were open. Although we had a spectacular walk from the top to the lake, we were very disappointed that the harvest was over.

Generally speaking, vineyards in this part of Switzerland are not "open". It's not like Napa where you just pop into any winery and there is a tasting room! You must make an appointment in advance with the individual winemakers to sample their wines. Unless your French is quite good, this can be difficult! The only places to go wine tasting in the area are in several central co-op facilities in Valais. There is one just off of the E62 motorway near Riddes, another one in the village of Leytron, and one more that I know of east of the E62 in Sion at the bottom of the road that goes up to Veysonnaz. I have heard that you can set up visits through the tourist office in Montreux but I have not done this myself. That is probably your best bet! Good luck!
