Lauterbrunnen - Where to base

Hi
we have 3 nights in early November that we are planning on stopping over in Lauterbrunnen on our way to Germany, based on how amazing we have been told the scenery is.

Can you recommend the best area to base ourselves in and the 'must do' of the area? Or advice if this is not a worthwhile stopover.
Thanks

Stay in Lauterbrunnen. Take the gondola from there to Grutschalp. From there hike to Murren. At Murren take the gondola up to the Schilthorn. Have breakfast at the restaurant.

Lauterbrunnen is a village, you cannot really divide it into "areas".
"Must do's" involve going up mountains (trains and cable-cars), walking, just experiencing gob-smacking views and super fresh air.
It is part of the "Jungfrau region", which is again part of the "Berner Oberland". There are 4 places you can stay in the Jungfrau Region.

  • Grindelwald - Largest, a town, with many facilities. Reachable by train or road
  • Lauterbrunnen - village in next valley. Spectacular U-shaped valley with waterfalls (Google for photos). Reachable by train or road
  • Mürren - village higher up above Lauterbrunnen. Only accessable by train (or on foot).
  • Wengen - village above Lauterbrunnen on oposite side of valley. Only accessable by train or on foot.

For info about all 4, and hotels, see here: https://jungfrauregion.swiss/en/summer/

November will probably see some snow on the ground but is too early for skiing. I would have expected Como to be pretty quiet in November

Be aware that the Schilthornbahn above Muerren will be shut down from Nov 11 until Dec 6.

Nothing to stop you going there in November, but be aware it is the low season, which is when they take the opportunity to do maintenance. Other routes will be open.

In the Alps there are two seasons: Summer for walkers, May to September, Winter for Winter sports: December to Easter. In between the locals take a break and some (but not all) hotels and restaurants are closed.
In November you will get some snow falling at the higher levels, though it probably won't settle, just melt. Still plenty to see, and plenty of mountains with trains to take you up them.
