Question regarding the trip to the top and back down. Does your ticket provide you the ability to stop in Gimmelwald and Murren and walk around a bit before hopping back on the transit?
I'm not sure what ticket you are talking about. It's been 5-6 years since we've been there.I had a Swiss Travel pass which allowed unlimited travel to Murren. From Murren, we purchased the ticket to go to Schilthorn. We loved both Murren and Gimmelwald and traveled between Lauterbrunnen and those villages multiple times.
You can walk between Murren and Gimmelwald on what I think is a paved trail (we were there in winter). It is an easy, short walk. (You can also do it in reverse except that it is uphill)
Yeah it does. You can also get off at Birg which is the stop between Murren and the top of the Schilthorn. The conductor will punch a hole in your ticket for each leg . My first trip to Switzerland I did not have a pass and just bought Super Saver tickets and one full price ticket roundtrip from Lauterbrunnen to the top of the Schilthorn. It was 105CHF full price without a Half Fare Card or Swiss Travel Pass.
I would discourage purchasing this ticket in advance if that's what you are thinking of. I would watch the weather and make sure its clear at the top before buying a ticket. Often, the best time to go is right away in the morning. Mountain weather often becomes a bit more unsettled as the day goes on. If its clear when you get to Murren, I would go all the way up to the top and then make your stops on the way down.
Yep I bought my ticket up the morning of . The hotels I stayed at I Lauterbrunnen had a TV in the room with a channel so you can see the weather conditions and visibility on top of the Schilthorn; or you can see that on the Schilthorn website 360 rotating webcam.
Agree with Jazz. There is an actual tv station that shows the condition at the top of both mountains. I could get it at my BnB
Thank you to everyone that replied. I sincerely appreciate the responses.
We did stop on the way down to explore Murren and it was well worth it.
Also realize there are two ways to get from L to S, make sure your tickets are correct for your preferred way.
If you want to make a loop ( up one way and down the other), I suggest you go anti-clockwise from Lauterbrunnen. That is, straight up to Mürren by cablecar from Lauterbrunnen to Grutschalp, then the little train into Mürren, walk through town to the main Schilthornbahn cablecar station and ride up from there.
For the descent, take the cablecar down to Gimmelwald (or get off in Mürren and walk down if you like). Board the cablecar at Gimmelwald and you have a thrill as the car swings out over the drop, with 2,000 feet of air below you. You end at Stechelberg and can take the bus or walk back to Lauterbrunnen.
