Wanting to leave Lauterbrunen and head to Salzburg Austria. What is a good pituresque german town that may be good to stay in for night to break up the trip? Looking at Lindau or Bregenz but don't know if that is worth stay in? Open to all suggestions.
What method of transport (train or car)?
By train, the route is via Innsbruck, so that is an option, but it isn't in Germany.
The alternative route is via Munich, that is longer and takes a lot more time, but then Lindau and Bregenz are good options (Bregenz is not in Germany).
By car, you can follow the same route via Innsbruck, and again not be passing any suitable German towns.
Or you can loop north through southern Bavaria, a slower and hilly route with no Autobahns. You then have Lindau, Oberstdorf, Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Füssen as options. These places all have rail connections, but not with each other, just north to Munich.
BTW, why are you focusing on German towns, and not Austrian?
I will be coming by train. I am open to anything really I just know from Lauterbrunen to Lindau is about 5-6 hour train ride. Didn't know if I could do anything a little shorter that would get me closer to Salzburg or the same travel time but get me closer to Salzburg. Or maybe around that travel time but in a better place to stay in than lindau.
Unfortunately Lindau is not on the route to Salzburg. The route the direct train takes is:
Zürich HB, Sargans, Buchs SG, Feldkirch, Bludenz, St. Anton am Arlberg, Landeck-Zams, Ötztal, Innsbruck Hbf, Wörgl Hbf, Kufstein, Salzburg Hbf
No stops in Germany.
Lindau is on the route to Munich. You could go Lauterbrunnen - Zürich - Lindau - Munich - Salzburg, but that would take longer.
Lauterbrunnen - Salzburg (direct route as above): 8 hours.
Lauterbrunnen - Lindau: 5 hours
Lindau - Salzburg via Munich: 4½ hours.
Lindau is a nice place, your choice.
Sorry I meant Lauterbrunen to bregenz and then stay in lindau and then take train from bregenz to salzburg

Sorry, I am still confused. Why get off the train at Bregenz if you are staying in Lindau? Lindau is the next stop after Bregenz, just continue on to Lindau by train.
Route 1 (as listed last time) This is one train all the way:
Zürich HB, Sargans, Buchs SG, Feldkirch, Bludenz, St. Anton am Arlberg, Landeck-Zams, Ötztal, Innsbruck Hbf, Wörgl Hbf, Kufstein, Salzburg Hbf
Route 2. Longer, requires much changing of trains:
Zürich - St. Gallen - St. Margrethen - Bregenz - Lindau
From Lindau you either cut north via Munich - Salzburg.
Or cut south Lindau - Bregenz - Feldkirch where you change to the train from Zürich to Salzburg as above.
Either way, yes, Lindau is a good place to overnight. So Is Innsbruck on the direct route.
Why not just stay in Bregenz, a resort town on the Bodensee?
