My daughter (22) and I will be staying in lauterbrunnen Switzerland for three days in June. We do not have a car, so we will be relying on the trains. I would like to find a place along the way to stay for one night on our way back to Paris to fly home. Any suggestions? Lucerne and Basel seems like halfway points but are quite pricey for hotels. I wondered if there might be somewhere else along the route that would be a hidden gem, easy to get to, and not as expensive.
Maybe Colmar, hardly a hidden gem, but a beautiful small city. There are a few direct TGV trains from there to Paris. There are frequent TER trains from Basel SBB to Colmar.
Were doing that next month with an overnight in Strasbourg…great mid size town, reasonable hotels right near train station…
How about Dijon, France? It's more of a hidden gem than Strasbourg or Colmar, and seems to be right on the train line from Lauterbrunnen to Paris. Your dilemma is that anywhere that gets you out of Switzerland is more than halfway to Paris. I haven't been to Dijon yet, but was looking at the Owl's Trail for an interesting walk, or there are all kinds of wine experiences there.
Nancy beat me to it: Dijon is great for a couple of nights, or one if that is all you have. BUT are you aware you can go the whole distance from Lauterbrunnen to Paris in a little over 6 hours if you choose the right route and trains?
I am aware. I just thought that it would be nice to break up the 6 hour trip and see another city rather than stay an extra day in Lauterbrunnen. 6 hours of travel followed by a day of travel from Paris to the U.S. seems like a lot back to back, but we can do that if we need to.
