Lauterbrunnen Region Swimming Spots!

Hello,
We have 7 days in the alps. Four will be in Murren. For the other three we would like to pick a town/spot near natural swimming areas. Any town and/or swimming spots wold be appreciated!

Thank you

If you mean lakes or rivers rather than swimming pools, that is known as “wild swimming”. This blog suggests several possibilities in the Berner Oberland, including two on Brienzersee which is not far from Lauterbrunnen.

I see they have included Oeschinensee, where family member have tried swimming but found it way too cold. And my husband is pretty cold-tolerant. So maybe the other places they suggest are cold as well.

My husband happily swam in Vierwaldstättersee (Commonly called Lake Lucerne) at a beach right near the downtown train station late last August; by this time in late summer the water had warmed up a bit. We are going back this year in September and staying in Weggis right on the lake, in hopes swimming will still be possible.

Murren has a swimming pool at the Sportzentrum, which is where you go to pay your tourist tax if you’re not staying at a hotel. Lauterbrunnen also has a pool. Not sure if you’re looking only for non-pool “natural” swimming areas.

Lola, thank you for the link! That is exactly what we are looking for. We will be there in early August, and hoping it won't be too cold to swim! By September it will hopefully be warm enough for you!

You seem to be very familiar with the area. Do you have any knowledge of Beatenberg on the North side of Lake Thun? We are considering staying there for a few days as well....

I am familiar with the area, but not all of it. We go to hike, so have only stayed in Wengen, Mürren, and Grindelwald. We have not explored the Thunersee area, other than a “roots” daytrip to Steffisburg to see my husband’s ancestral home. And never been to Beatenburg.

But he is a swimmer, and he likes to swim wherever we go, which is how I know a bit about wild swimming in Switzerland. He has swum in the Limmat River right in downtown Zurich, and has joined the throngs swimming in the Rhine in Basel. He will jump in a lake wherever he can —-Oeschinensee at Kandersteg ( very cold) the Bettmersee at Bettmeralp (nice), and others. Plus the park/beach I mentioned in Luzern. We may try Brienzersee when we are in the area in September, after seeing it mentioned in the blog.

The blog mentiones Därlingen - there are many little places along Lake Thun like this - Leissigen, Faulensee, Speiz, Einigen, Strandbad Thun, etc. A fun thing to do is rent a bike and ride along the lake, stopping at these locations along the way.

In Interlaken there is Neuhaus, if you have taken the boat on Lake Thun it is one of the stops. There is a nice restaurant there, grass area, beach volleyball and swimming area.

In Ringgenberg, above Interlaken is Burgseeli with warmer water.

Beatenberg is lovely. Beautiful views from up there, lots of sun, many hiking trails, can be reached by bus or funicular. You can go up higher to the Niederhorn and access hikes from there as well. I find it to be less busy and much less touristy than some of the other local areas.

Just thought of this as well - It is also very popular to boat down the Aare river from Thun to Bern, if that interests you.

Beatenberg! The most beautiful views in the world, in a sweet village. The bus comes through once an hour and delivers you to Interlaken West in 20 minutes, where you can connect to trains going everywhere in Switzerland. Day trip to see the Matterhorn, etc. Beatenberg itself has a few hotels and restaurants and many vacation rentals. We find it immensely relaxing to stay there above and away from noise, heat, busy sidewalks…And yet we can quickly be in Interlaken , or on a train or bus to other locations, or on a lake steamer on Thun or Brienz… we’ve gone every summer/autumn for years and find it a great place to relax, to get to know the friendly local people, and to observe and participate in Swiss customs. (And to sit on our deck drinking local beer and marveling at the views). PS, also a nice swimming pool in the center of town.
