Lauterbrunnen: "Reasonable" Accommodations

Ugh! Apparently I waited too long to get things booked for our four night stay in Lauterbrunnen June 20 - June 24. I'm not a fan of shared rooms, but also not a fan of hotels costing over $200/night! I'm in communication with Valley Hostel and they might be able to put us in a shared room for the 1st two nights and then move to a private room for the 2nd two nights. In the meantime, I thought I'd reach out here to see if anyone has any suggestions.
I did look into Camping Jungfrau, which has cabins. But in reading reviews I can't tell what they are like climate-wise in June. Also, one reviewer commented about the mice, and that's really off-putting to me.

The purpose of our time in Lauterbrunnen will be to
(1) relax somewhat comfortably after a hectic schedule in Italy where we are staying in convents as well as regular hotels.
(2) visit Murren
(3) experience at least one longer hike with wildflowers, cows and green pastures with snow capped alps.. Aaaah!
(4) do other 'easy' outdoor things like rent an ebike, shorter hikes, stroll villages
(5) eat authentic swiss food

Any and all suggestions/recommendations will be much appreciated!!

I understand the sticker shock, but “reasonable” is a matter of perspective. You are looking for lodging in one of the most expensive areas in the world, in peak season, and late in the game.

If you’re open to staying in Wengen, there are a few options for your dates on booking.com, just slightly over your budget.

You could email Denise at Chalet Fontana in Mürren and see if she has a room available for your dates in the Bed and Breakfast. The bedrooms are private, but shar a bathroom. We have stayed there several times in the past.

The apartment mentioned on the webpage is also listed on AirBnB and the listing there shows it is fully booked for June, so that is not an option.

There is also a small budget hotel in nearby Stechelberg.

Their own website is under construction, but you can book it on booking.com.

Private double rooms with shared bath art $150-$175 a night; double room with private bath $200.

Switzerland is much more expensive than Italy.

Thank you for suggestions; I have researched all! Unfortunately Hotel Oberland is book for double occupancy and the hostel doesn't have a private room. My concern with hotels in Murren or Wengen is how to get there. We will be coming from Venice by train and when I use Rome2rio.com it shows Venice to Murren 3 taking hours longer than if I just stopped in Lauterbrunnen. For Venice to Wengen, it shows we would be walking from Lauterbrunnen! Am I missing something here? I'm new to all of this. I've planned all my accommodations and trains in Italy but going from Venice to Murren/Wengen is confusing me. This is why I was just looking at staying in Lauterbrunnen but I'm not having any luck finding accommodations there. Please advise. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with me!!!

It's only a hop skip and jump from Lauterbrunnen to Murren, I imagine it is similar for Wengen. There are many posts about the area, or just google it. Don't use RometoRio except as a start to your research. It is not always comprehensive or accurate.

Once you reach Lauterbrunnen, you can take a different train to Murren, OR you can take the bus and then two cable cars--you buy one ticket from the bus driver (if you have a half fare card, it applies to all of these conveyances). The rest is easy. Once you have been on a train all day it may seem like a lot, but it is really simple and efficient.
The Murren train station and lift stations are at opposite ends, so you might want to choose based on accommodations, but it's a flat paved walk across the village.

I think your budget is not realistic for the BO in season, you might have to find something in Interlaken and take the little train each day (which is hardly the end of the world). Or someplace like Thun.

Wengen is super easy to get to from Lauterbrunnen. It’s a quick 11-minute, scenic ride up. Trains run every half-hour, but they are timed to be there waiting when the train from Interlaken arrives. You step out of the one train, walk a few steps, and into the other.

Murren is slightly more complicated as it involves walking from the Lauterbrunnen train station across the street to the cable car station. The 4-minute cable car ride takes you to the waiting train for the 14-minute train ride to murren.

Transportation in Switzerland is super easy. So, no need to worry. Find a hotel you like and you'll easily get there.

I should have added, if you use the SBB website or app for your phone, you can enter your start and end locations and get details on the journey time and number of stops and changes. I like to pick the times with the least amount of changes to make things easier.

Carrie and Valadelphia thank you for taking the time to help me figure things out. It sounds like Murren is indeed doable from Venice, which opens lots more options for me. Thank you so much!!!

You're welcome--it is difficult to plan in Switzerland, but once you are there, it will be wonderful (and worth the $$$!)

I have seen Rome2Rio be wrong before, but this one takes the prize.

I is quick, easy and fun to get up to Mürren. From the Lauterbrunnen station when you get off the train, just follow the people heading away from the tracks to the cable car station. It is maybe 50 meters? As you enter the station, look around to see if there is someone taking baggage to put in the little cart that attaches below the cablecar. There has been each time we have made this journey. They do this to make more room for people ( and dogs) on the cablecar and the train. Then join the lineup on the steps for the next cablecar ( all of this assumes you have tickets or a pass already).

They will pack the cablecar pretty full, but no worries—-it does not travel far from the ground, and the ride is very short, like 3-4 minutes.

At the top ( Grutschalp), assuming you handed over your luggage, just walk off the cablecar and find seats on the waiting train. Sit on the left side if you can, for views over the valley. They will attached the cart with luggage to the train and you can collect your bags at the Mürren station.

I am getting so tired of that rubbish app giving absurd answers. And with all the publicity give it unfortunately people believe it. Why would they otherwise?

So now they want you to walk up a cliff???

Absurd.

I'm not knocking you, OP, or others who believe the ridiculous answers it gives.

I think this 3 hours takes the biscuit of all the way out answers, First prize.

It is so absolutely easy to get from Lauterbrunnen to Mürren. Cross the road or take the tunnel. Walk into the cable car station. Get on the cable car. Enjoy the beautiful ride - look out the back, or if scared stand in the middle and close your eyes. It will be over very soon. When it stops the big door opens. Step out and turn right. Up a very short incline and get onto the waiting train. Ride the cute train until it stops a few minutes later at the end of the line. Get off. You are there.

3 hours!!! wow

As you can probably guess, many of us here on the forum think highly of staying in Mürren, a "car-free" village, above Lauterbrunnen. Reading your purpose for staying in the area: Relax, hike, cows, green pastures, snow-capped Alps, stroll villages, and eat authentic Swiss food. Mürren meets all those requirements. However, I'm not sure you can rent bikes in Mürren.
Also, the Hotel Alpenblick is close to the train station, if you follow Nigel's directions to get to Mürren. I think the Hotel Alpenblick is less expensive than some of the other hotels in Mürren. Also, emailing the hotels directly often gives you a better room rate. And sometimes, mentioning "Rick Steves" will give you an additional discount.
You will love Mürren.

Oh my gosh, I'm so glad I asked about getting to Murren!! Oh, I'm so happy! I just booked a mountain view room al the Hotel Alpina through Priceline. (I'm a bit nervous about using Priceline, as I've never used it before but neither the hotel website nor booking.com had mountain view rooms available.)
Thank you one and all who took the time to assure me that getting to this piece of heaven on earth actually a lot easier than what I was led to believe. Thank you for taking your time to share directions/instructions with me. You are so wonderful!! I'm so grateful :)

We stayed in Murren last June, at the Eiger Guesthouse. Great people, decent/quaint restaurant and bar. Loved it. Catch a lift up from there or wherever and stroll back down. Very easy to get around.

And I would be very surprised if there's not a place to rent bikes. There's a huge Sportzentrum there that could probably suggest a place.

Last bit: I don't know if you have booked your trip from Venice to Murren yet, but on www.sbb.ch you actually book a through ticket Venice - Murren. Having a through ticket has the advantage that you do not have to interrupt your journey to go and find a ticket office for the next leg.
In Switzerland the public transport timetables are set for short transfers. You may be worried about those at first, but the time is enough to make the transfer from one train to another, but usually not long enough to go and find a ticket for the next leg. Trains typically run every half hour though.

I would agree with previous comments that it is very easy to get from Lauterbrunnen to the towns on both sides of the valley. We enjoyed staying in Lauterbrunnen partly for this reason when we were there in winter three years ago. While we had a private room, the Valley Hostel was great- very diverse age groups (older couples, younger couples, families, etc). And we enjoyed it's very central location.

And I would be very surprised if there's not a place to rent bikes.

There used to be a line of Trotti-bikes at Sportzentrum.

A rideable two wheeler that doesn't know if it is a huge scooter with really big scooter wheels or a off road bike with a really low platform. I've never used one but I've been passed by a few. Looked like a whole bunch of fun.

You will enjoy your stay at the Hotel Alpina in Murren. I am glad you were able to work this out.

One thing that I find helpful is to go to You Tube and put in the search box "Visiting Murren" or something similar. You will find loads of info about the transport options.
