We will be in Switzerland in late September for 4 days. I’d thought of staying in Lauterbrunnen as I did once before but I see many comments about staying in Murren. I’d appreciate thoughts on the two places. We want to relax, take novice hiking trails and go to Schilthorn.
Thanks for any suggestions!
Blessings,
Sharon
It would help also to read through the previous posts, and this gets discussed a lot (there is a lot of good info), but I'll briefly summarize. Lauterbrunnen is more or less flat--you are looking up at cliffs and waterfalls. Murren is in the mountain tops. It's Murren all day for me, but you can easily visit one from the other. Determining factors: day trips and what else you want to do, and any physical limitations
Everything is generally accessible from both locations.
I love the tranquility and picturesque beauty of Murren. Being there will add brief but scenic cableway rides down to the valley, or up to the Schilthorn, or accessing trails across the valley. There is also a cableway and narrow gauge train option to get to Murren which may be convenient depending on where you stay. No cars or crowds is a plus.
If every minute counts for getting around then the busier, option filled, Lauterbrunnen may be best. All of which is easily accessible from Murren.
"We want to relax, take novice hiking trails and go to Schilthorn."
If that was my goal for the area, I would stay in Mürren.
I think "relaxing and Mürren are synonymous. Be sure to have a meal on the deck of the restaurant at the Bellevue hotel.
Schilthorn: To get to the cable car, you just need to walk to the station from your room; perhaps take the first car up and have breakfast at the revolving restaurant at the top.
There are many options for walking or hiking from Mürren. We like to take the funicular up to Allmendhubel and begin hiking. Or...you could have lunch at the restaurant at the top. We've never done that, but I've always wanted to eat there...while looking across the valley.
Thank all of you for the input. I think I’m going to Murren this time!
Blessings,
Sharon
No interest in Wengen? I actually prefer Wengen over Murren, but it’s personal taste, of course.
In Mürren you’re up in the mountains. It’s picture perfect with no vehicles.
As you're planning to go to the Schilthorn, Mürren is a good choice as there are only two cable car legs to the top from there (so the ride is slightly cheaper).
When in Mürren you might take the Funicular up to Allmend Hubel and then hike back down. It's not difficult at all.
