Lauterbrunnen/Mürren

I don't have recent experience - I was at Sprutz waterfall in 2018 and LOVED it. I didn't find it the least bit dangerous. I have heard of some rockfalls but that is on the Wasenegg Ridge above the waterfall. There is a guy from Wengen who responds here regularly - he may have more up-to-date info. Certainly by the time you get to Lauterbrunnen or Murren you will be able to get THE most up-to-date info. I just chime in here to say, if there is any way to get to Sprutz waterfall, do it. The best part is you can walk BEHIND the waterfall!

RS is not the only one who writes a bit of a warning regarding this route.

Assessing the weather and conditions is wise. You can ask at the tourist info in Mürren on the day you want to hike it, they will be able to tell you the conditions of the trail for that day.

When you are there you will see that Lauterburnnen does not have a long period of direct sunlight each day. Not sure what time it will start to shine in the valley on the exact days you will be there, but as far as busyness goes, I would do a morning ride. There are a lot of tourists who walk along the farm road/path and they are just enjoying the views, not thinking about traffic. You will have to pass them very slowly to avoid accidents.

The valley is not very long, I am not sure what you mean by going deep into it - unless you are going to do some mountain biking trails up. For a longer ride going towards Interlaken is a good idea, or even down to Zweilütschinen and up to Grindelwald.

Sprutz - is it dangerous? Depends on your skill level. There is some loose scree at the end, but if you have decent footing you’ll be fine. Whether it’s worthwhile is a different question. It’s very overhyped in my opinion. There are way better waterfalls.

The Valley is deep in shade for a good portion of the day, so I’d just go whenever makes sense with the rest of your itinerary. When you rent bikes in Lauterbrunnen and bike the valley if you mean to go “deep into the valley” and then “on to Interlaken” those are 2 different directions and I don’t recommend the plan. The route to Interlaken is along the road and not very scenic. Instead, bike up to Trachsellauenen, which is truly “deep into the valley” and much better than Interlaken or stopping at Staubbach or Trummelbach.

Book paragliding a day or two out once weather is for sure. Morning or afternoon is fine but you’ll get more backlit views in the morning. Use AirTime from Mürren.

@wanderweg Thanks for the helpful data. When I said "deep" I meant we intend to ride to the end of the valley, past Trummelbach. I have heard it is more scenic as you go farther from town. I do appreciate that you mention a specific route and will consider that. I hope there places near Trummelbach to lock the bikes.

I have walked (not ridden) from Stechelberg to Lauterbrunnen. Its a nice walk. You can stick to the main road, but even better, there is a paved path that parallels the road much of the way (look for it on a Google maps or any map, its west of the main road). Very nice for walking or cycling.

I hope there places near Trummelbach to lock the bikes.

There is a little cafe/store there (also where the PostBus stops), where you can lock your bike (if nothing closer to the cave entrance).

Its true Sprutz is not the biggest waterfall, but the ability to walk behind it is quite special. We did it as a stop on a longer walk down from Birg to Gimmelwald.

Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg is about 5 km/3 miles. It would take about 15 - 20 minutes to ride that distance. With an e-bike it is even faster.

You will certainly want to enjoy the scenery along the way, and definitely take the route that Darren suggests. It is more scenic than the main road and, other than at the beginning near Lauterbrunnen, it is for local traffic only and eventually only for farm vehicles. You can cut across to Trummelbach from there - you will see the path.

To do as Wanderweg suggests is more of a mountain bike experience….going up in elevation. If this is what you are looking for. I don’t see a path listed matching her description, but I also do not bike in that area.

If you are renting e-bikes you can cover quite a distance with them in just a few hours. I have a few routes that I do near my home (pretty flat ground) that are about 27 miles and I ride them in under 2 hours - without trying to hurry. That is why I think the Lauterbrunnen Valley is pretty small for much of a bike ride.

Going up to Trachsellauenen isn’t mountain biking, it’s a well groomed gravel service road that goes up to the Bergrestaurant that is very commonly used by bikers. It’s true that it has elevation gain, but it definitely isn’t mountain biking (roots, rocks, etc) and is doable with average fitness with an ebike and some basic biking confidence. I was up there a few days ago and saw around 20 other casual bikers, many of whom I could tell had rented bikes at Imboden.

Yes, you can lock up at Trummelbach but be prepared for a 1+ hour wait to get in depending on what time of day you go + the time it takes you to tour inside.
