Lauterbrunnen Lodging

Hi, we are spending a week in early September in the BO. I booked a chalet in Mürren, but I’m having second thoughts and am thinking of Lauterbrunnen instead. Why? We will do some light hiking, but we aren’t hikers per se. I see us also checking out the villages and views and potentially doing a day trip or two a little further away. I’m wondering if staying in Mürren will require a lot more travel time to do these other things. Is that a needless concern?

If anyone can recommend a rental with access to a washer in Lauterbrunnen I would love to hear about it. There are just 2 of us so a one bedroom, or even a studio, could work. I would like to keep the budget at under 200 CHF per night.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

One thought - do you want to be looking UP at the Alps or do you want to be IN the Alps? We have stayed in Murren twice, and will return. The big debate here is usually Murren vs Wengen.
Have a great trip in this incredibly beautiful country. Safe travels!

Self service washers and dryers at Hostel right in the middle of Lauterbrunnen.

Pat, thank you for your reply. I’ve considered your question. The valley reminds me of the Yosemite Valley, where I have been many times and always enjoy it. Of course a mountain view would be wonderful. I guess I’m just thinking about the transportation logistics.

Michael, thank you for the information about the laundry facilities at the hostel in Lauterbrunnen. Are they available for anyone to use, or only guests staying at the hostel?

Hey Andrea, hope you're well! Having stayed in both Lauterbrunnen and Mürren on separate trips, I think Mürren offers a better overall experience. If you're there for a week, you're likely buying a Swiss Travel Pass to cover those days; so the only consideration in getting to the valley floor (Lauterbrunnen) versus staying there is time, which takes about 15 minutes via two gondolas [transferring once, in Gimmelwald]. The scenery is absolutely stunning!

If you do choose Mürren, there’s a little laundromat behind Hotel Bellvue which we found clean and efficient (very Swiss!).

Hey Matt, I’m sorry I missed you on Saturday. Thanks for sharing your experiences and it helps that you have stayed in both so you can compare them. You didn’t steer me wrong in Bruges, so I think we will keep our reservation in Mürren. The rental has a washer available.

Andrea, I think you made a great decision staying in Murren. I have been to Yosemite, and it's different, as Yosemite Valley floor is much wider , as I remember it. Lauterbrunen Valley is more closed in, and can be in the shade of the summits, depending on the season.
Have in incredibly fantastic time in this beautiful country. I can't wait to return!

Hi Andrea. We always stay in Lauterbrunnen for the very reasons you mention. It is a little less transportation when you want to go to the Wengen side (takes about 45 minutes) and for day trips out of the valley.

Under 200 CHF in early September is a tall order. Have you looked at Camping Jungfrau again?

Hi Laurel, I did look at Camping Jungfrau again and the price for the mobile home is similar to the price for the chalet in Mürren. I’m sure there are less expensive options there, but I prefer to have my own bathroom as opposed to having to walk an unknown distance for a communal one. One advantage of CJ is the more generous cancellation policy. One never knows when a trip will have to be cancelled for a variety of reasons. We are campers, well glampers anyway, and enjoy interacting with others in a camping setting. I may reserve at CJ and keep the other reservation while I consider the options. I’m sure it would be easy to rent out whichever one isn’t cancelled for that time of year.
