Lauterbrunnen/Jungfraujoch Advice

Hello! I am seeking advise on three points for an upcoming trip to Switerzland.

  1. Our travel includes Zurich -> Lucerne and then Lucerne -> Lauterbrunnen. Our tickets are already booked departing Lauterbrunnen. We also would like to to Jungfraujoch and take the train there. The rail passes are very confusing to me - what advice do you have on which to get? It seems to me we are not doing enough travel to make a pass worth it, but may be missing something.
  2. When do you advise we get tickets for Jungfraujoch? I am seeing conflicting information. Some people say book in advance to ensure a seat (and by the way, is a ticket different from a seat?), and some people say to wait until the day(s) before to see what the weather is. What should we do? It will be in July/peak.
  3. When we go to Jungfraujoch, what flexibility do we have on routes? We will be staying in Lauterbrunnen but are interested to spend a bit of time seeing Eiger (not long, just to see some climbers) and potentially stop in Grindelwald or Wengen (and if the latter, do a hike back down to Lauterbrunnen). Are any of these possible and, if so, what timing/tickets should we consider?

Thank you!

Can’t advise on passes without knowing how long you’ll be in Lauterbrunnen and what all you plan to do.

You can reserve a seat in advance and then purchase the actual ticket day of when you know the weather is good. That way if weather is poor you’re only out the seat fee. Regardless, be prepared for this to be a jam packed tourist circus in July. The trains, viewing platforms, etc are going to be packed to their max.

Route depends on if you want to spend your afternoon/evening in Wengen or Grindelwald.
Lauterbrunnen > Train to Wengen (walk around) > Train to Kleine Scheidegg > Jungfraujoch > Eiger Express to Grindelwald > Train to Zweilutchinen > Train to Lauterbrunnen
Or do this in reverse to spend time in Wengen for dinner. Lauterbrunnen>Zweilutchinen>Grindelwald>Eiger Express > Jungfraujoch > Kleine Scheidegg > Wengen > Lauterbrunnen

Note, you probably aren’t really going to see climbers. I’ve been there many many times and never been able to see a climber. It’s so massive that I guess if you get binoculars and know where to look, maybe you’ll get lucky. If you like an easy hike and if they open it back up from the landslide (TBD), you can also do Lauterbrunnen > Wengen > Männlichen > Panorama walk to Kleine Scheidegg > Jungfraujoch > Eiger Express > Grindelwald > Zweilutchinen > Lauterbrunnen
