Lauterbrunnen/Camping Jungfrau

I am working on our first trip to Switzerland (not counting a day trip) in September and I have 7 nights planned for the BO. I booked a chalet in Mürren, but the cancellation policy isn’t great. That makes me nervous. In 2020 we had reservations at a mobile home at Camping Jungfrau. I checked there and the mobile home is a similar price to the chalet, but the cancellation policy is much better. We aren’t serious hikers, though we will do some of the easier to moderate trails, but with a week we will have time to explore other places as well. My dilemma is deciding between Lauterbrunnen for ease of transportation and Mürren for the views and consideration of the cancellation policies. Has anyone stayed at Camping Jungfrau? What was your experience like? How far is it from the train station and is there a bus stop nearby? We are RVers and enjoy campgrounds. Thanks for any thoughts and advice you may have.

HI Andrea. We have not stayed at Camping Jungfrau but if we could not get the apartment we usually get, we would stay there. I would, however, get the biggest unit with a small kitchen and toilet facilities. (Walking outside to the loo at 3 AM is not my idea of a good time.)

It is about a 20 minute walk to the train station, and less than 10 minutes on foot to the bus stop at Schützenbach if you cross the little bridge behind Camping Jungfrau and walk out to the Main Street. You cannot really see this on Google Maps but we walk through there all the time so I know it to be accurate.

Thanks Laurel. The reason we chose the mobile home was because it is self contained with a kitchenette, bathroom, an area to sit inside and it has a porch outside. I’m hoping there will be chairs on the porch since we obviously won’t be bringing our own. There were less expensive options in cabins, but they didn’t have bathrooms. The days of community bathrooms at campgrounds is a thing of the past for me.

I understand the pros and cons. My biggest concern is the ability to cancel on fairly short notice. I would have to cancel the chalet at least 42 days prior to arrival or lose the entire rental amount. The campground has a 14 day requirement.

I’ve looked on booking dot com, airbnb and VRBO for lodging. If anyone has any recommendations I would be happy to hear them. This is part of an 11 week trip and although I expect Switzerland to be more expensive than most of our places we still need to keep the costs in check. As far as is for cancellations, my potential reasons that may come up probably wouldn’t be covered. It’s too late for Cancel For Any Reason policies.

It is about a 15 minute flat walk from Camping Jungfrau to the Lauterbrunnen train station, and this is according to Google maps which I find to be very generous in the amount of time needed to walk from one location to another. There is definitely no need to rely on the bus at this location. It takes 22 minutes to get from Mürren to Lauterbrunnen. So you are not actually further away by being at Camping Jungfrau.

The Coop in Lauterbrunnen is near the train station, so it will also take about 15 minutes to walk there, and there are wonderful farm stands/vending machines closer to Camping Jungfrau where you can buy local cheese, dried meats, and other items produced on the farm.

Yes, you will not have the same views, but of course you do not need to hang out in your mobile home but can be out and about exploring. Plenty of views to be had all around, and it will be easier for you to get out of the valley to go to other locations if you choose to do so. If you decide to go with this option it is definitely not a bad one.

Edit: I just read that Laurel said similar things in her reply. Good, that will help to solidify it for you. Again, this is not a bad choice.

One tip though: The COOP in Lauterbrunnen is rather small, and often a madhouse during the season. My suggestion is to go to the COOP in Interlaken (opposite the Ost station) if your excursions make you pass through there.

Thanks to all for their advice and points of view. Maureen, I also saw that the train station in Lauterbrunnen is only a 15 minute walk from CJ, which is no big deal. I am going to do a bit more exploring for options, but right now I’m leaning towards CJ for the cancellation policy and we enjoy campgrounds and interactions with others. Campers are generally a friendly bunch of people. Of course most of the time will be spent in other places, using CJ or wherever as a base to stay in.

My apologies, for some reason in my head I read Camping Jungfrau and envisioned Camping Breithorn, so my advise was based on that. It was a long day yesterday, haha! :) I’ve deleted my posts to avoid any confusion for people in the future.

No worries wanderweg. We all do things like that, or at least I do.
