Lauterbrunnen area things to be sure to do

Hi, we are looking to find a home base for 4 nights in Lauterbrunnen area. Would love to hear where you would recommend staying and what kinds of day activities in the area you would make a point to do- we will have our 17 and 19 year olds with us so able to hike (and will also be ready to soak in the calm of the area after other travel) etc. Thanks for your suggestions, appreciate hearing peoples must sees/dos as we plan. We will be going in the month of August.

In addition to hotels that folks might recommend, I'll also mention that www.campingjungfrau.swiss has trailers for rent. We've camped there and loved it.

As for activities, they are: hike here, hike there, hike everywhere. I'll send you (or anyone else who asks) our dozen favorite hikes in the area, with maps and pics. Just click on your name in the upper right to read your forum mail.

kk,

You might consider staying in Lauterbrunnen. It's the transportation hub for the area, and provides easy access to both sides of the valley.

Day activities.... where to begin. A lot will depend on your budget and your preferences. A few to consider....

  • Hiking
  • trip to the Schilthorn and lunch in the revolving restaurant
  • trip to the Jungfraujoch (the highest rail station in Europe)
  • Tandem Paragliding (be sure your medical insurance covers that sort of activity)
  • explore the various small towns in the area - Mürren, Gimmelwald, Wengen, Grindelwald or perhaps even Interlaken
  • visit Trummelbach Falls

You might want to have a look at the RS Switzerland guidebook (better yet, pack a copy along with you). Depending on which activities you choose, one of the Swiss passes may save you some money. You'll have to do the number crunching.

It would probably be a good idea to get a hotel booked soon.

Rent some bikes in Lauterbrunnen for the kids and send them on their way. They can take the bikes on the cable car from Lauterbrunnen up to Grutsalp, then ride flat or downhill to Murren, Gimmenwald, and back down to the valley floor.

However, when I am in that region I always opt for doing nothing over doing something. I'd go out of my way to help someone if it meant nothing got done. A shady spot in the valley or in one of the cliff-side towns with a good book and a picnic is better than going to the Jungfraujoch.

I would love to see your favorite hikes, maps, etc. We will be in Murren in August and I've been trying to pick out some hikes to do while we are there. Thank you!

one suggestion for evening meals in Lauterbrunnen, is to try the restaurant at the caravan park ( just a nice walk outside the main town)
we found it a better option than those in town, it was always busy, so we booked a table each night.
hope this helps.

If you’re the adventurous type do the Via Ferrata in Mürren. Thrill of a lifetime and bring your GoPro. Check out videos on YouTube. Paragliding. Expensive, as is all of Switzerland but again unforgettable (170€ pp). Hike the North Face trail from Mürren. 2-3 hours about 1200’ elevation gain and great views. Pack a picnic lunch and just take it all in. Get a beer at one of the chalets in the hills along the way.
