Lauterbrunnen and Glacier Express

Hi

At the end of August my husband and I will be based in lauterbrunnen for 5 days at the end of August and wondered if it would be possible to do the Glacier Express journey as a day trip from there. If anyone is able to let me know the cost of doing the journey from lauterbrunnen I would be appreciative, I am finding it difficult to find the cost of the journey online.

If the Glacier Express journey is not possible in one day are there any alternatives that you can recommend? In previous years we have visited th Schilthorn and Jungfraü.

Many thanks.

You certainly could, but only do the Glacier Express between Brig and Chur. Go to www.sbb.ch/en to see the schedule and pricing. Be sure to specify via Brig or you will be routed via Zurich, which would be faster and cheaper, but that's not the idea. I took a look and here is my suggestion.

Leave Lauterbrunnen at 7:33 am and meet the Glacier Express at Brig, getting you to Chur at 13:34.
Return from Chur via Luzern to put the icing on the cake with the Luzern-Interlaken Express over the Bruenig Pass. Train leaves Chur at 14:39, changing in Zurich, Luzern, Interlaken getting you back by 19:25.
The first part shows a price of 123.60 CHF and the return of 86.60 CHF. You will also need to buy an reservation for the Glacier Express train (30 CHF?). That comes to about 210 plus res fee. If you are staying in Lauterbrunnen, I would expect you have Half Fare Card at the least, so that would cut the price in half, but not the res fee.
