Looking at spending 2 days in Lugano coming from Lausanne. Which is better, by car or public transportation? thinking of trying to catch the food festival in early October.
I'd prefer to travel by train on that route. One of the easiest trips will be a departure from Lausanne at 08:20, arriving Lugano at 13:17 (time 4H:57M, one change in Zürich). There are lot of other solutions.
When you arrive in Lugano, you can take the Funicular down to the city (takes a minute and a half, CHF 1.30) or take a Taxi right to your hotel.
Definately by train.
The quickest option may be via Zürich (or sometimes Luzern - Arth-Goldau), but that is not the most scenic. I would recommend Lausanne - Brig - Domodossola - Locarno - Lugano.
Shorter in distance, but longer in time. This route includes the "Centovalli" scenic line. You could go one way and come back the other.
See the Swiss Rail map here to compare the two routes: https://www.sbb.ch/content/dam/sbb/de/infotexte/uebersichtskarte-sts.pdf
