Lausanne or Montreux for 3 nights

Staying for 3 nights. Was planning on staying in Lausanne Ouchy at Hotel de Port on the lake. But am now thinking that Montreux may be nicer. We will be touring the Lavaux Vineyards and train to Gruyere. It looks like it is a lot more costly per night to stay in Montreux and Rick suggests Lausanne but he does not mention any hotels on the lake. Don't know why.

If you can afford it Montreax, it's prettier and more tranquil, but on the flip side it attract an older demographic. Lausanne nice as well but is a bit more "urban", and has a younger vibe to it.

Another factor is the terrain...the main part of Montreux is not very hilly - it's more compact and up against the lake. Lausanne goes from the edge of the lake and steeply climbs the hills that end in the vineyards - the streets get steeper the further up you go and the cathedral sits at the top. It is cheaper and more picturesque but your legs will certainly feel it! Have you considered the town of Vevey? It's much more open and is as beautiful as the other two - gorgeous lake-front promenade and some spectacular hotels right on the lake. It has a lovely old town and a twice-weekly market. You really can't go wrong with any of these three!

I had not considered Vevey. I had booked Hotel du Port in Lausanne and the heard negatives against Lausanne and Ouchy so am considering Montreux. I am looking for beauty, convenience to train and boats, cost, and charm. My first trip to Switzerland and only visiting 3 areas, Luzern, Lausanne/Montreux, and Gimmelwald (in that order).

I'll look into Vevey any ideas best places to stay. I like small family owned places with great views and walking to everything.
