Laundry Facilities in Murren

Hello! Does anyone know of laundromat/laundry facilities in Murren?

I have the 2014 edition of Rick Steves Switzerland, and in it he says the Hotel Bellevue has a 24/7 launderette in its basement, open to all. Checking their website, I see this is still the case: https://www.bellevuemuerren.ch/english/laundromat/

I stayed at the Hotel Edelweiss, and they had laundry facilities I could use (they charged a nominal amount).

I used the laundry room at the Hotel Bellevue several years ago. There are 2 washers and 2 dryers I believe. Drying took FOREVER! Just a heads up!

Hi Marie, where are you staying? We stayed at the Hotel Jungfrau a few years ago and they had laundry service available through the front desk. They gave us a laundry bag and washed and dried it for a set fee (I think it was just 10 Swiss Francs). We had it back the same day.

Jill reminded me - drying took forever at the Hotel Edelweiss too, and even after all that time, the clothes weren't fully dry. Use the highest setting, no matter what, and expect to have to hang the clothes for a while so they get completely dry.

In Europe, most dryers are ventless (condenser) dryers, which don't heat the clothes - that's why they take forever and don't work the way we're used to. Googling, I found this article, which says that vented dryers have actually been prohibited in Switzerland since 2012, and gives lots of other information about them: http://laundry.reviewed.com/features/everything-you-need-to-know-about-ventless-dryers

A problem I ran into in England (not sure if it's true in the Hotel Edelweiss or not) was that a cold water wash took 90 minutes, because I had neglected to choose the "short cycle" (or so I was informed after I complained). If you're not using cold water, it takes even longer, because unlike US machines that are hooked up to the hot and cold water, European washers are hooked up to cold water only. So the machine has to heat the water before the cycles can start.

Europeans think their washers and dryers are just dandy, by the way, so this is the only place I can vent (pardon the pun). Complaining about them there just gets blank looks. Much like many European showers, some aspects of travel definitely make you appreciate the US more, in ways you never expected.

IF you use the hotel machines, they will most likely insist you use their soap as well. It is special soap designed for high efficiency washers and is not like most of the soaps you can bring with you from the US. I used their soap and discovered I was highly allergic to it as I broke out everywhere the clothes I laundered touched my skin. It was not a comfortable situation. Laundromats don't seem to have that issue with the soap.

So if you have skin sensitivities, you might want to wash without adding the soap. There is enough residue in most HE machines to still get your clothes clean while reducing the possibility of irritation.

The Bellevue still has self-serve laundry services as of June. Down hill in Gimmelwald, the Mountain Hostel also has self-serve laundry.

I can confirm that the Hotel Bellevue still has laundry facilities. I was there last (rainy) Monday on the Best of Switzerland tour. As others have said, two washers and two dryers. 5 francs to wash; 5 francs to dry. It does take awhile. Allegedly, the dryer has a sensor. Nonetheless, things were still a little damp.

It got real busy about 5:00 p.m. Waiting for laundry not a good use of time in Murren, but if the weather sucks, it's not as bad.

Next time (hopefully there will be one), I might see what my hotel offers.
