We will be arriving via train to luzern late in the evening, about 10:30 or 11. Our hotel is a walkable distance, however we are wondering if it is safe at that time of night, or should be take a taxi and if so, are they readily available at the station at that time?
Very safe, clean and orderly. Taxis also easy to find at the stand as seen on Streetview here: http://goo.gl/maps/WMjgy
OMG, I've read some over-the-top "is it safe" posts in my time, but this is the best. If a tourist ever were mugged in Luzern, it would make the national news.
In USA I think it could be a fair question for some cities. I am guessing that's where these type of questions come from.
We are from the US and this will be our first trip to Europe. It never hurts to check.
Very safe. Very safe. We have been through and back through and we have never had any problems at night, even very late. We always stay in the vicinity of the train station but go all over.
Thanks all for your replies. Better safe than sorry right and not assume.
mr,
As the others have mentioned, you should be perfectly safe in Switzerland, and especially in Lucerne. I've walked back to my hotel there (located in a quiet residential area about 15 minute walk from the station) late in the evening and never felt "unsafe" at any time.
One point to add though - if your hotel is some distance from the station, using a Taxi is probably a good idea. I find that after a long travel day, hauling luggage and not knowing the layout of the city (especially at night), using a cab makes things so much easier. You shouldn't have any trouble finding a cab outside the station, as it's a busy place.
