Late March weather in Zermatt

March in the Alps is really variable in March - Could be beautiful, could have zero visibility. I've skied at the Matterhorn in both conditions. Other options like Munich or Salzburg for some city enjoyment, less chance of disappointment.

Sorry but it’s just one of those places that’s not predictable.

Are you able to stay for a few days? This gives you a better chance at some good weather, but for sure no guarantee. Zermatt itself is a very nice village...but of course you want to see the mountains as well, especially the Matterhorn, and that is really impossible to predict.

Definitely no guarantee , but if you stay multiple nights you increase your chances of a clear day when the matterhorn is visible. The more nights , the better the chances. You can also google historical weather figures by month to get an idea.

I was there a little later ( April 6th) and had clear skies. But as said this is not a given. If you have more days, chances are at least one of them will be clear/ sunny. The weather this high in the mountains is very changeable. Also, maybe you can see the Matterhorn a bit higher up ( Riffelberg or Gornergrat itself), if the clouds are lower.

My husband is a skier, and we have been going to Switzerland recently for his bucket list of ski resorts.

Zermatt will certainly still be in Winter mode, potentially with snow on the streets. It is about three hours and a half or so by train from Basel. Train service across the country is excellent, very reliable, reasonable in price, and can handle most weather conditions.
Zermatt is a very nice place to visit, small, historic, and fun, and the Gornergrat train experience up towards the Matterhorn is fabulous.

Your views of the snow-covered alps will be magnificent..
It will be cold, but you may have days with bright sunshine and beautiful blue skies.

Skiing will still be in pretty full swing, and all restaurants and bars will be open and busy, and some may require advance reservations.
During the busiest times Zermatt hotels often require week long stays, but hopefully you will be able to get some shorter stay options. I recommend approximately three nights to truly enjoy your visit.

Are you flying home from Zurich? Usually when we fly home to the USA we stay overnight at the airport, so we check out from our hotel, then take the train back to Zurich Flughafen, and stay right there before the early international flight the next day.

I often like to add pre and post stays after my cruises as well--it is nice to incorporate a different type of experience. But I prefer to cruise in warm weather, as I frequently go with husband to his freezing ski destinations!

Regarding weather-- in Winter 2018 Zermatt received so much snow--with blizzards, and avalanches-- that they had to close down everything and helicopter tourists OUT! This Summer 2026 due to climate change and a heat wave, they have closed all Summer skiing, and the Matterhorn has almost no snow on it! So, weather predictions are never truly possible!
