Lake Leman or Oberland

Hi everyone,

I am very excited about my first trip to Switzerland. My brother and I will be doing the Bernina Express (commuter version) and the Glacier Express (tourist version).

Our itinerary looks like:
Day 1: Train from London to Bern
Day 2: Explore Bern
Day 3: Explore Bern and travel to St Moritz
Day 4: Explore St Moritz
Day 5: Bernina Express - St Moritz to Tirano and back
Day 6: Glacier Express, stay in Zermatt
Day 7: Explore Zermatt, travel to Lake Leman region, we are thinking Lausanne or Montreux
Day 8: Explore Lake Leman
Day 9: Travel to Geneva early, explore a little, back to London late on.

The main point of the trip is the two train rides, but we are keen to make the most of our time! It dawned on me today that instead of Leman, perhaps we could go to Oberland and stay more in the mountains before heading to Geneva. At the same time, we don't want to overdo it and it might be that Oberland needs a holiday of its own.

Does our itinerary look reasonable or are there some changes you would make?

Thanks!

I’ve been to St. Moritz and far prefer staying in Pontesina, a mountain town just an 8 to 10-minute train ride from St Moritz. There is a hike to the Morteratsch Glacier just a few minutes south of Pontresina, with the trailhead starting at the Morteratsch train stop.

You could stop over in Lauterbrunnen or Murren to get a glimpse of the Berner Oberland. The detour from Interlaaken is just a half-hour train ride. You also could overnight there with minor revisions to the plan. I would recommend this over staying on Lac Leman.

I would skip your day in Bern or just give it the morning to quickly explore before moving on. This gives you some time to stay in the mountains where you’re already going instead of adding something in logistically complicated. You can see the gist of Bern in a couple hours and give the bulk of your time to the alps.

Day 2: Bern > Pontresina
Day 3: Pontresina
Day 4: Bernina Express RT
Day 5: Glacier Express to Zermatt
Day 6: Zermatt
Day 7: Zermatt
Day 8: Zermatt > Montreux (afternoon in Montreux)
Day 9: Morning in Montreux > Geneva > London
