We have a free day from Lugano during our RS 12 days of Switzerland trip. Is it worth the time/effort to spend the day in the Lake Como area? If so, any tips, tricks, or must see/do/eat items?

Where will you be on that free day? That may determine whether it is “worth it” to visit Lake Como.

If you are willing to get an IDP and rent a car for the day, it's under an hour drive to Menaggio, then very short ferry rides to Varenna and Bellagio. What do you want to do once you are there?
