Kirchberg to Murren

Am going along with my son on a business trip to Kirchberg mid Oct. Any suggestions on day trips for me while he is in classes? Also have Fri am free with him until we fly out of Zurich Monday am. Was considering Fri and Sat nights in Murren or Lauterbrunnen and Sun night in Zurich before we fly out. Would prefer Murren but seems like some hotels are closing until winter. Suggestions?

There is more than one Kirchberg in Switzerland, is that Kirchberg, Bern or Kirchberg, St. Gallen? Plus over a dozen other Kirchberg's in Germany and Austria.
Assuming it is Kirchberg, BE, than the Bernese Oberland (Mürren, Lauterbrunnen etc.) are doable on a day trip.

But, as you say, many hotels and restaurants in the mountains close down at the end of September (end of summer season) and don't re-open until skiiing starts in December. Also the weather can be miserable in October, snow and low clouds.
Suggested day trips: Bern, Luzern, Interlaken. Or Zürich for shopping (assuming you are female).
Look up a few sample train times on the Swiss Railways website (www.sbb.ch). According to the map the station for Kirchberg BE is called "Kirchberg-Alchenflüh".

Do you mean the Kirchberg Plateau in Luxembourg, where so many of the embassies and big places are?

You could take a train to Metz, connect to Strasbourg and on to Basel, where you can get a train for Spiez (or Bern) and there is regular service to Interlaken Ost where you connect via Lauterbrunnen to Muerren.

Or you could fly the short flight from Findel Airport to Zurich or Basel and train from there. I'm not sure which is faster, Zurich (via Bern) or EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiberg; they are both well suited for getting on the train. Basel has a short electric bus ride (flags on the front and all) to the station, Zurich has a station in the airport.

@Nigel: I did somehow assume (s)he meant one of the Kirchberg's in Switzerland, since (s)he was flying out of Zürich. (S)he could, of course, have meant any of the following :-)

Austria

  • Kirchberg am Wagram
  • Kirchberg am Walde
  • Kirchberg am Wechsel
  • Kirchberg an der Pielach
  • Kirchberg an der Raab
  • Kirchberg in Tirol
  • Kirchberg bei Mattighofen
  • Kirchberg ob der Donau
  • Kirchberg-Thening

France

  • Kirchberg, Haut-Rhin

Germany

  • Kirchberg an der Iller
  • Kirchberg an der Murr
  • Kirchberg an der Jagst
  • Kirchberg, Upper Bavaria
  • Kirchberg, Saxony

Luxembourg

  • Kirchberg, Luxembourg

Switzerland

  • Kirchberg, Bern
  • Kirchberg, St. Gallen

P.S. What did you mean by "Basel has a short electric bus ride (flags on the front and all)"? Basel gave up trolley buses some years ago, just trams and normal buses. They only put the flags on the front on holidays!

OK, memory lapse, ok? I remember a white (was it number 50, no maybe something else) bus, thought it was electric, from in front of the SBB Hbf to the airport, and I distinctly definitely remember either cloth or painted flags on it from different countries to identify it as the airport bus.

So sorry. I am going to Kirchberg, Bern. Ricks book gives good info on transportation, but I was questioning whether it was wise to try and stay in Murren mid Oct or just go for a day trip from elsewhere. Thank you for your replies.

To summarise, Mürren and many of the small resorts will have many closed restaurants and hotels in October. The bigger towns like Luzern and Interlaken should be OK. And Bern is worth a day trip at any time of year.

We stayed in the Hotel Bellevue in Murren last October 16, 17 and 18 and LOVED this hotel. We also had great weather, although, the day we were leaving was a little overcast.

We hiked everyday and sat outside at various restaurants for our meals on those three days.

I would check with The Bellevue to see if they are open. We would definitely stay there again in October.
