Kandersteg in the Berner Oberland

This might qualify as a trip report but I am posting it here as more Switzerland-bound folks might stumble across it.

We just spent 3 nights in Kandersteg. This was our second 3-night stay as we visited last year as well. We are smitten and have already planned 5 nights there next September. As is so often the case, a return trip yields a depth of knowledge, things discovered that we missed the first time through, and a list of “gotta-dos” and repeats for the next time.

There is lovely scenery, a calmness not found in the Lauterbrunnen Valley at this time of year, great easy hikes (our specialty) as well as hike to challenge the most energetic and fit twenty-somethings. It is a sweet village that feels like a great place to live.

The hotel we stayed at, the Hotel Blümisalp, offers incredible hospitality and phenomenal optional half-pension dinners as well as a stellar a la carte restaurant. (Husband is an award-winning chef.) There is fabulous as-good-as-Italy pizza at the Hotel Chalet Adler, and a to-die-for bakery, the Marmotte, in town.

The Berner Oberland Regional Pass covers all buses, trains, and lifts here, but you will also receive two “gifts” from participating hotels, a Guest Card good for buses and trains from Reichenbach to Kandersteg and Adelboden (not as nice as Kandersteg, IMO), plus a lift card good for the 3 cable cars that run out of Kandersteg.

Kandersteg would be a great stop for 3 or 4 nights on your way to-or-from the Lauterbrunnen Valley. We won’t stop going to Lauterbrunnen but we will tack on time in Kandersteg every year.

Thanks for the post, Laurel. If I am fortunate enough to get back to Switzerland, I will definitely plan a stop here. It sounds like my cup of tea.

Myswisslife, we are “easy hikers” so nothing challenging.

  • We have done Oeschinensee (just the loop from the lift to the lake and back) in the past so skipped that this year
  • The Sunnbüel Rundweg past the Arvenseeli is nice and was a repeat. Last year we did the rocky trail to the lakes which had no water and some aggressive cows chased me along a narrow path. Although the cows were down in the valley already, we decided to bypass the lakes and go around the southern end and the Arvenwald. We are intrigued by the Gemmipass but concerned it would push our stamina, as well as cranky knees and hips.
  • Day trip to Adelboden out of curiosity to do the Engstligenalp walk. It was interesting and fun to see all the families out, but not a repeat for us. Long way to go from Kandersteg, 90 minutes each way! Kandersteg just seems more like our kind of town.
  • On my list for next year is the HöhWeg (The website says “heh” but the signs say “Höh”.)
  • Took as easy morning walk today on this all-abilities route. The Wegeti-Rundweg
  • Also on list for next year is to go to the Allmenalp when the farm is open. We missed it by a couple of days. Not sure about hikes there…
  • Gasterntal. The last day for the bus was Sunday so we missed it this year. Will go earlier next year and make this work!
  • Last year we walked a portion of what was billed at the Lötschberger Nordrampe from Kandersteg to Blausee mostly on the west side of the river. This year the info seemed to direct one to follow the (new?) Lötschberg Panorama Trail via Felsenburg. Might try that next time, or a section of the Südrampe.

Would love to hear about YOUR easier hikes. Thanks!

Thanks so much for posting this. Perfect timing too. I am just starting to think about a 3-week Switzerland trip for 2024. I have been researching the Dolomites, including your book, and it just does not appeal to me as much as Switzerland. I just got back from Austria and did a day trip to Brixen, Italy. I just didn’t like it as much as I thought I would. I feel like Switzerland has ruined me for all other countries. 😊

Kandersteg I think, might fit it in well with my plans for Zermatt, Wengen, and Luzern. And it has my 2 favorite travel foods—pizza and pastries. 😊

Any thoughts on how this area might be in early June? I’ve been to Switzerland in both June and Sept. and I think I prefer June as it was less crowded. And the wildflowers were amazing! Less cows though.

Swiss life, I’m hoping you’ll add your experience here too. And anyone else who has been.

My swiss life, I just found the Swiss Mobility site last week so will be investigating more with an eye to future trips! Loved seeing the World Scouting Center and we “met” (I use the term loosely) a group of NOrwegian scouts headed up to Sonnbüel and a hike over the Gemmi Pass. I’d love to do that one. Have you?

Carrie, as to the Dolomites, please don’t base your decision on Brienz/Bressanone. The Val Gardena, which many of us are so fond of, is quite different, and the Alpe di Siusi lures me with a siren song.

I do feel your love for Switzerland, though. We are spending all 8 weeks of our annual trip in-country next year. take a look at Pontresina if you have not done so yet, and Bettmeralp.

Swisslife, thanks for the additional info. Sounds like June will be a great time to go.

Laurel, 8 weeks next year, wow!!! I’ll get to the Dolomites eventually, it’s just moved down on my list. I have it in my head that it just can’t compete with the Berner Oberland.

Beatenberg is on my list. Maybe Monday if the weather is good! Thanks myswisslife! Saving Aeschylus for next year, I think.
